Teen Angst Wasteland: the enduring appeal of teen superheroes

On Oct 1, 2009 12:00 PM

@powerdad - I like what you pointed out about being relatable, and that is probably why I dislike the Young Avengers so much, their whole genesis seemed forced and calculated to be a response to the Teen Titans. There were way too many cliche moments from modern culture thrown in, and the characters just arent fleshed out enough. A teen Vision? Really?

First Impressions of Characters Can Last a Lifetime

On Sep 29, 2009 9:00 AM

For me the list is as follows Iron Man = Bob Layton Cyclops = Dave Cockrum Cap = Jack Kirby Thor = Walt Simonson Batman = Neal Adams Soider-Man = John Romita Sr. Fantascic Four = John Byrne Dr. Strange = Paul Smith That isnt to knock the current groups of artists, but thats who I think of with those chracters.  But when I see Humberto Ramos or Bill Sinekewiscz, or Joe Maduria do ...

Can Someone Just Stay Dead?

On Sep 2, 2009 12:00 PM

I must admit that when Buck was revived from death that I didn't like it.  But because it was well don and the fleshed out the character greatly it turned out to be a good thing.  The flaw in both publishers logic is that they are wasting a "death" story on charcaters who in now way will stay dead.  Batman? no. Superman? no. Green Arrow? No.  The only exception has...

For This, I Say "Thank You, Rob Liefeld."

@Josh- I agree completely, the work should always be up for debate whether liked or disliked.  I ran into Jeph Loeb at a con a few years ago and told him that I didn't really get an issue of Action that he did, and he explained what he was trying to achieve with that issue and admitted that it didn't live up to his intent.  I was respectful and didn't attack him personally and he was ...

08.09.2009 - Episode #196 - Chew #3

On Aug 9, 2009 5:23 PM

Great review guys! Regarding Chew I agree with Ron about the cartoon-style of the art and normally I don't care for it either, Humberto Ramos comes to mind with that style and I don't enjoy his work at all. But here I think that it works because there is no point of refernce for these characters, the artist here is defining these characters.  It would be interesting to see if another artis...

Neal adams rated below Greg land and Jim Lee.  Just Wrong.  And no Walt Simonson? Equally wrong.

Spider-Woman Hits the Web

On Jul 20, 2009 4:16 PM

I like it.  I like the way that it is like those old Marvel Cartoons from the 60's, too many cartoons now are age regressed and crappy. like the new Iron Man.  If this is the style that is needed to tell a story about and adult character without making it Fritz the Cat then I am ok with it.

Herogasm started an argumment at my LCS this week.  The owner has refused to place the book on the shelves because of the content, but one of the employees felt the bokk was along the lines of Heavy Metal.  Clearly he didn't read the book.  I looked through it as well, and while Ennis work on The Boys and Crossed is pretty out there, this is just porn with no redeeming attributes...
