New Comics for 01/07/09 missed Wednesday
On Jan 5, 2009 5:10 PMLight week for me, too. I pulled Hellboy - Wild Hunt #2, The Punisher #1 (?) by Remender and Opena, X-Men Noir #2. I'm most looking forward to the last one. I was really surprised at how much I liked the first issue and the twists on the characters they did. I really want to see what they do with the Brotherhood here. Also, Buffy keeps surprising me with every new issue, but I'll agree with ...

On Jan 4, 2009 5:32 PMI agree with Josh and Paul in regards to not being able to stop analyzing the film from a distance and just getting into it. I couldn't do it either. I kept thinking this was Frank Miller doing Frank Miller. The little bit of Will Eisner that broke through was fine for what it was but wasn't enough to sustain it for me. I also agree that this was more of an experiment in technique than an actu...

On Jan 2, 2009 9:00 AMAwesome column! My personal preference on the long story with a definite ending vs. neverending soap opera, would be towards the latter. I like and can relate to characters more than following a particular story for the full length. It's probably why I can't watch an anime series to save my life. Batman is my favorite character of all time, even though I don't by the book(s) in singles every m...

On Dec 31, 2008 9:00 AMOK, so I'm not usually one to get superexcited about crime fiction so Criminal flew above my radar. But, hand me some Brubaker supervillainy and I'm so there. Picked this up yesterday and it's sitting third in my stack. So, I'll get back when I actually read it. But, oh man. That cover needs to be a poster on my wall right now.

On Dec 25, 2008 3:00 AMHere are my thoughts on the "film": - There were few moments where I wasn't rolling my eyes at the in-your-face "cool" style of the movie. I honestly thought the visual look of the film was inconsistent and ugly for a good portion of the beginning and had annoyingly obvious visual cues (like the sepukku portion of the Japanese backdrop scene). - One of those moments...

On Dec 24, 2008 6:07 PMI haven't read my whole stack yet this week, but this was defintiely the most anticipated read for just th reasons you said Ron. This book brings me back to when I first started reading the New Avengers and was loving every page. Billy Tan's work here was really excellent. Great action and, where it needed it, wonderfully rendered emotional scenes. The scene with the Jessica and the Skrull wo...

On Dec 24, 2008 5:11 PMSlow-rolling credits FTW! I read American Born Chinese awhile back and loved the heck out of it. I recommend Gene Yang's work all the time to my Asian friends who are buying gifts for their children. Also, Derek Kirk Kim again. Someone who got a lot of buzz with "Good As Lily", but his earlier work is much more autobiographical and displays his own artistic skill as well. Good job ...

On Dec 22, 2008 5:01 PMAwesome show. You guys zipped by everything so quickly though. Amzing how much you packed into such a short amount of time. Double kudos to you! I'm glad to see that Jason Aaron was one of the two best people working in comics this year. He truly is and my pick for best story arc this year would be his Black Panther Secret Invasion tie-in. Other than the Captain Britain first few issues...

On Dec 20, 2008 7:20 PM@DaveCarr: The Plain Janes is a great book as is most anything that came out from Minx. I particularly like "Good As Lily" by Derek Kirk Kim. While listening to this podcast I was walking in the rain to my local coffeeshop and immediately made a beeline to my LCS to grab Ex Machina #40. I, like Conor, had moved to trades with this book, but your showering praise on this issue and th...
