The glory days of my comic reading was when I was a little 'un in the mid-'80s, begging or stealing comics from the local general store.
In the early '90s I experienced a surge of interest in comics--because of all the fun gimmicks--which lasted until about my junior year of high school...when I "got real".
I did a paper on From Hell in college, though. That series surprised me, seeing a collected edition of it in the college bookstore.
I didn't really get properly back into comics until midway through grad school, when I happened to find out that I could read comics free in Borders...and also read them free on the internet. I started doing that so much that, damn, I started wanting to buy them again.
First: local store
Second: juvenile gimmicks
Third: bookstore placement
Forth: internet and bookstore freebies
But I'm still sad that the five-year-olds out there today won't see Marvel comics at their local stores.

The iFanboy Letter Column - 11/20/2009
On Nov 20, 2009 1:00 PMI think movie fans are way way way more critical and negative than comic fans. Maybe the average moviegoer isn't that negative, but the millions of people who are in-depth fans of film definitely are. They complain about upcoming films waaaay more than the average comic fan complains about upcoming comics. But the difference is, by the very nature of the medium's place in society, the "av...

On Nov 19, 2009 3:06 AMAcross various comic websites, it's cool to see a mix of opinions and levels of excitement about different projects. In most other places, the Blackest Night love and hype have been nearly nauseating (NEARLY, but I'm still likin' it alright, heh); on iFanboy, y'all just matter-of-factly review the issues as they come out, and I generally agree with you guys: all four BN issues so far have been ...

On Nov 18, 2009 11:29 AMVery interesting article. I've often thought about the difference between comic writing, film writing and prose writing. I've never written a comic but have penned several screenplays and a few novels (and have found some success). But your article also underscores how alien I am from the mental place where a lot of you guys live. No offense, but I would never force myself to write an imagin...

On Nov 14, 2009 7:39 PMOh guys. There are two acts I've tried my hardest for years to avoid ever hearing: Mika and Flight of the Concords, but in the past 24 hours I've been coerced into hearing both of them. Mika was playing when I walked into an FYE yesterday. And now this. I hate to be proven right about things like this; I'd rather just avoid ever finding out. The level of masculinity, conviction and individuali...

On Nov 10, 2009 12:01 PM@mikegraham: Why, you'd pay for it because it's "new technology", some flickering little thing that you can watch on a varietry of little screens. In the future, how many carbon credits will it have cost to make and view something like this? Will ordinary citizens be able to nominate endeavors that are completely redundant and wasteful, so that maybe the government can just say &quo...

On Nov 8, 2009 4:37 PMThe other day I was also thinking about how, all through the '90s (and back even to the late '80s a bit), there were a lot of multi-part prestige comics for like $5-$7. I don't remember many people complaining too much about them back then, in the days when a regular issue was like a fourth the cost of them. In today's market, that would mean that you'd've paid about $12 for the Lobo part one ...

On Nov 6, 2009 4:00 PM@AMuld: I noticed that too. Weird. ' I have very little desire for comic book "news" as it were, and while this is going to sound so totally ridiculous, I think we have some of the best comic writers out there working on this site. Who am I going to read that's better than Jim, Paul, Mike, or Sonia?' Well, what the iFanboy writers do are more 'lifestyle' articles (centered...

On Nov 5, 2009 9:00 AMYeah, what strikes me most about comic ads these days is how half of them seem to be for kids 10 and under...and the other half seem to be for adults capable of purchasing cars. I'll be reading a new Marvel or DC comic, and on one page I'll see an ad for Fantastic Four-themed birthday party stuff, then an ad for a Spider-Man sippy cup...and then an ad for a new Honda. Real strange. I guess it k...

On Nov 4, 2009 9:00 AMThese things make me happy almost beyond words: The writing on Batman & Robin (and the art again once the next storyline kicks off--and hoo boy, the way I'm anticipatin' the focus of that next storyline). The art on Detective Comics (and the writing's beginning to win me over too). The bi-weekly goofiness/quaintness of X-Men Forever. The lore of Marvels Project. The slick production ...
