Name: Jonathan Dranoff

Life-long Marvel fan with a growing interest in great stories from other publishers. Favorite work these days includes anything Astro City, Captain America (especially since Cap's death), and Astonishing X-Men. Favorites of all time: Watchmen, X-Men/X-Factor in the Sinister/Apocalypse era, '70's Avengers, Astro City (especially the single issue with Samaritan and The Infidel), Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch. Wish list: the ability to read through a D.C. "Infinite" epic, actually understand what's going on, and suspend disbelief.

Comic Sales: Nobody Knows Anything

On Aug 18, 2008 11:45 AM

It is hard to believe that anyone thinks that the comics business has to be saved. I have been reading comic books for the past few decades since my adolescence, and the changes are dramatic (and positive):   1. Comic book quality is better than at any time I can remember. I may hate comic prices, but I love the fact that comics look great (I just got a chance to read Green Lantern: Reb...

08.13.2008 - Secret Invasion #5

On Aug 14, 2008 2:39 AM

This was the right pick of the week. I thought that SI: Inhumans was great, but its importance and appeal are more limited. Secret Invasion #5 is ambitious, far-reaching, ...and successful. The roller coaster analogy is valid. Mr. Bendis, you got this train a-rolln' now, Sir.

Comic Book Base Of Operations

On Aug 5, 2008 10:46 AM

Great post - I have wondered about the secrecy of bases of operations forever.   My only explanation is that individual contractors are hired for very small parts of the job, and that the overall plans for each project are known only to the heroes/villains themselves.

07.30.2008 - Wolverine #67

Although this would not have been my POW (I preferred Black Panther), I am certainly sympathetic to your pick, Josh. The review was strong, as always. However, I wish you had kvelled a little bit more over McNiven's art. Pictures like this are what makes comic books a special medium for storytelling.

07.23.2008 - Uncanny X-Men #500

I like this pick. This issue had the combination of lightheartedness and drama that characterized Whedon's Astonishing. I get the feeling that this is the new X-Book for the casual but long-standing X-Fan. Heck, there was even a fastball special!

07.10.2008 - Powers #29

Hate to start a new controversy, but what the heck...   If you had to choose, which would it be? 1. Powers 2. Fables   No chance to read the other. No chance to read back issues of the other.   Thoughts?

Crisis Crisis: Don't Blame Didio

On Jun 23, 2008 11:45 AM

Jim, Sir, I am in complete agreement about how hard it is to get into a DC story without being a DC expert. I continue to read DC trades, because some of them are fantastic. You are right - Identity Crisis was breathtakingly good.   On the other hand, the two prior Infinite Earth crisis books were an excersie in incomprehensible density. How many Green Lanterns do I need to know in ...

05.14.2008 - Captain Britain and MI:13 #1

Conor - fantastic pick. And not a typical "Conor pick", so kudos to you, hombre. Like you, I loved erstatz John Lennon. I know nothing about Pete Wisdom, but he seemed cool. The Black Knight explaining why he has to be a smartass - nothing short of awesome.
