TheApeThatEscaped

Name: Jason Jackson

Have been reading comics since the mid-seventies.  Started with the UK 'funnies' - the Buster, Whizzer & Chips, etc and worked my way up to Battle Action and 2000AD.  My first American comic book experiences (beyond the UK black & white reprints of the Incredible Hulk and X-Men) was Ghosts issue 100,  something featuring the Man-Thing and a Marvel Tales reprint of Spiderman 158.  Have always preferred crime and horror comics to superhero ones, but have always had a soft spot for Batman and Spiderman.

I took a break from comics in the 90's, but was tempted back by a work colleague who leant me a couple of graphic novels back in 2007.  Now I'm buying more comics than ever!  iFanboy has definitely helped me finding where it's at.

Favourite comic books are currently Hellblazer (still going after all these years! yeah!), Proof, Hellboy, BPRD, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, Detective Comics, Scalped, Hack/Slash and far too many more besides!

New Comics for 10/14/2009 Is Crunching Through Leaves

On Oct 12, 2009 5:30 PM

Good week - some pulls I can't wait to get my hands on and my eyes glued to - Scalped, Hellboy, BPRD, Godland.  Some I'm pulling almost through habit (BN Batman, GLC - they're good, but enough of the dead guys already, & Red Robin).  And some new books on the block I might just check out (The Anchor, oh and some new thing called 'Web of Spiderman' whatever that's all ab...

Labor Day Delay: New Comics on Thursday

On Sep 7, 2009 5:04 PM

Comics were a day late in the UK last week due to our summer bank holiday so it'll be another Friday Fun day!  At least it gives me extra time to read some of them graphic novels I've been meaning to catch up on.  All those Astro City trades and the Rick Geary Treasury of Victorian Murders that I've been acquiring since watching those iFanboy video shows.  Every cloud...

Do You Speak French? What Does it All Mean?!

On Jul 14, 2009 9:16 PM

Any one for the genius that is Jacques Tardi? Of all the BD artists he is my personal favourite.  Is particularly strong on war and crime books, but is most famous for the wonderful 'Les aventures extraordinaire d'Adele Blanc-Sec' - the Belle Epoch investigator of the occult.  Unfortunately the few English translations of his work are out of print, although there was an 8-page stor...

Quality vs. Quantity - Walking away from comics which don't deliver

On Feb 5, 2009 12:00 PM

Sonia, you speak the truth.  This less is more philosophy should be applied not just to comic books, but to other areas of life.  Hey, like, woah!  I say "should" coz I know I am guilty of hoarding and not really appreciating all that I've got.  Comics, music, dvds, books... enough is enough.  Its time to take stock and rationalise my purchases. Maybe...

02.04.2009 - Amazing Spider-Man #585

On Feb 5, 2009 12:49 AM

I'm cutting back on my books, but I won't be dropping this one anytime soon.  It may be quite a commitment as its out 3 times a month, and then there are the occassional 'extra' issues, but its consistently good comics.  It's rarely my pick, but that's probably because its so regular and consistent that I take it a little too much for granted! Shame on me!

When did everyone start taking Grant Morrison's comics so personally?

If ya's likes, ya likes, if ya's don't ya don't.  May reason triumph over rage. Someone send in the Blue Lanterns!

01.21.2009 - Dark Avengers #1

On Jan 21, 2009 7:52 PM

I agree, Secret Invasion was such a let down - and an expensive one at that!  I'm going to hold back on this one.  Good review though, and it has got me interested... but, I need to save some cash and cut back the number of books I pull, so... and like mikeromo I too am just tired of all of it.  Not sure its event fatigue as I don't feel the same way about Final Crisis or Batm...

"WHAT does Nick Fury LOOK like?!"

On Jan 14, 2009 1:39 PM

'Ere ain't Samuel L Jackson the bloke off them irritating Barclays Bank ad's (in the UK at least).  He's also the chap who played a kilt wearing "Master Chemist" called Emo in the 2001 film 51st State is he not. Is it such a loss if Sam da man don't play one eyed Nick? Not really.  So long as they take care with the casting.  It doesn't have to be a big name - in f...

Happy Thanksgiving from iFanboy (& our favorite comic creators)

On Nov 27, 2008 9:00 AM

Good article, Sonia.  Respect to Mr Wade. Hailing from the South West of England I really don't get this whole Thanksgiving shenanegins.  Isn't it just a practice run for Christmas? Family gathering with much stuffing of face with turkey and other delightful treats.  Personally I'm thankful we only have Christmas gathering to deal with! In the UK there exists a point of v...

Ouch! I've just pulled 15 comics, plus there 3 outstand pulls from last week!  It may be pay day this week, but I've got to think again about what I actually walk outta the shop with.  Definitely on the list are my regular fixes: The triple Brubaker whammy of Captain America #43, Daredevil #112 and Criminal #6, Fear Agent #24, Echo #7, Invincible #54,&...
