For The Love of Hardcovers

I've been wondering something about hardcovers--specifically Absolutes and Omnibi. I know they are beautiful and all, but how are they to read? I'd like to have them because of the treatment and to placate my completest tendencies, but being rather new to the genre, I would like to actually read the stories.
