Richard Starks Parker The Hunter Hc

This matches & exceeds my (high) expections and the hype surrounding its release. A true work of art that somehow manages to surpass the (high) quality of the original work by the great Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake, RIP). If you haven't already done so, read the book, the graphic novel & then watch John Boorman's superb film, "Point Blank". Great write up & this will...

"100 Bullets" by Azzarello & Risso is one of the great comics (crime or otherwise) of this era.

The Catwoman graphic novel, "Selina's Big Score" (by the great & all-powerful Darwyn Cooke) fits the bill for tales about villains. It's not so much a super hero book as a classic heist story told from the thieves (including Catwoman) P.O.V. Also, it serves as the perfect lead-in for Cooke's upcoming adaptation of Richard Stark's "The Hunter".

05.03.2009 - 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'

I thought it was pretty bad although it didn't drive me up the wall probably because I'm not that big an X-Men or Wolverine fan (or rather I don't know a lot of the mythology). Judging by a number of the comments here, they really destroyed a lot of important characters & continuity. It reminded me of those cheap knock-off science fiction films of the 1970's. It's astonishing this thing cos...

03.06.2009 - 'Watchmen'

The podcast views were almost identical to my own view of the film. I liked the movie, but I'm not too sure of how much, if at all. I think I respect it more than I liked it, at least on the first viewing. I'll definitely have to go back for a more nuanced interpretation. It did seem to be unnecessarily lethargic early on and then rushed at the end. That said, for "civilian" viewers o...

Guillermo Del Toro & Steven Soderbergh are the masters of Director Commentaries. Their movies are worth buying simply for the commentaries alone.

"Luther Arkwright" is crazy entertainment. I read it a few years ago & it will swallow you whole with its  parallel science fiction/fantasy world.

One good thing about stacks is that at least you have something waiting on you to read when you get home. Beats re-reading something for 2nd, 3rd, or 10th time. I, too, have a growing stack of "Thor" comics even though I like the darn thing. I'm not sure why that one gives me pause.

Ditko's work is so otherworldly that it's worth putting in the time to get comfortable with that era's storytelling. That "Watchmen" book looks very tempting (as does the "Willie & Joe" collection).
