War Is Hell First Flight Phantom Eagle Max #2 (OF 5)

Garth Ennis is one of those great writers that you tend to forget about.  He doesn't jump from one high profile project to another and he doesn't work on event books so sometimes he gets forgotten.  Here's hoping he does more stuff like War Is Hell.

Ennis's two best friends, sex and violence, are of course present, but it doesn't feel at all gratuitious like it does in some of his other work.  The Phantom Eagle is hopelessly and hilariously naive, as he bumbles about in matters of both love and war.  Sometimes his naivete, particularly with the prostitute, is so over-the-top that it borders on unbelievable, but he's nevertheless endearing.

Many don't care for Chaykin's art, but I'm not one of them.  His art is so expressive.  Gentlemenly almost.  He's at his best when there are guys in suits bantering and ladies running around in lingerie.  He's a perfect artist for books set in this milieu, as he's already proven in Blackhawk.

Phantom Eagle #2 is an improvement on the also excellent first issue, and I look forward to reading the rest of this series and, hopefully, the series that are inspired by it.
