Powers Annual 2008

Powers Annual 2008

Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS & MICHAEL AVON OEMING
Art & Cover by MICHAEL AVON OEMING

Price: $4.95

This Powers Annual gives us a little more background on Walker's time as a caveman.  Alas, no monkey sex.  The story is fine and the art is fine, but, unless you're a completist, you could afford to skip it, especially at 5 bucks.  It doesn't directly tie into the current arc so I wouldn't consider it a must read by any means.  In the backmatter there's a rountable discussion among several creators, compiled from Bendis's message board, that is far more interesting than the story.  A good book, but not a must-buy.

Christ Almighty, I was assuming that was a metaphor that went over my head, like the apes in '2001.'  Maybe I wasn't missing as much as I thought.

(And now I've got the 'Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer' song from SNL stuck in my head).

the last Powers I read was 'Who Killed Retro Girl.'  When I flipped through this I was totally lost.  Any recommendations on some good Powers trades to get me back up too speed?

As Powers is a serialized story, you really should just go in order and read them all.  I believe that the "Walker Caveman" story took place in the late 20s or early 30s of volume one.  That monkey sex reference is there for a reason!

@ultimatehoratio -- I do appreciate the whole serialized story aspect, but I'm not sure that what you're describing is something I would WANT to spend money on.

If you don't like Who Killed Retro Girl, you're not likely to like the rest.  That's where I'd start.  Just like Y: the Last Man or Fables or 100 Bullets, it's hard to jump right in the middle.  It's a little more accessible that those three examples I mentioned, but the enjoyment is certainly enhanced by knowing what came before.  This annual is not really indicative of how good and satisfying the Powers series is, particularly if you're a Bendis fan.

Well, at least it had the back matter, right?  While it's nice that this ties into something (because frankly, I was a little worried), I'm not sure I want to drop the dough just so I get it.  I've been enjoying it since issue 25, and I'll just store this one away with the rest, content that I'm supporting creator owned work.
