Star Wars Invasion #1 (OF 5)

I must preface this review by stating that I have read a good portion of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) novels, so I am familiar with what is happening in this story and the antagonist Yuuzhan Vong.  That may color my opinion.

This book opens with an image of an invasion force arriving at a fringe planet with the intention of conquest.  We then follow a family on the surface as they respond to the invasion and eventually resist.  As a first issue, this does exactly what it is supposed to.  It sets up the situation (the threat, the tension, and the protagonists) without resorting to exposition.  The invaders are kept appropriately mysterious and yet threatening.  The protagonists are appropriately courageous and competent.  Tom Taylor (the writer) is able to inject that esoteric Star Wars quality that makes the films (and novels) so magical for some of us.  Colin Wilson provides solid, if unspectacular, art.

I really enjoy the Yuuzhan Vong as I feel they are a very fitting foe for the Jedi contingent.  They are technophobic and are able to exist outside the force as we know it.  They are also incredibly skilled warriors due to the extremely Darwinist society they live in.

I enjoyed this issue and look forward to future issues.  I feel that anyone who enjoys the original trilogy and is interested in what happens after The Return of the Jedi will enjoy this issue (regardless of past EU experience).
