This week I walked in my
local store anticipating to only purchase Detective Comics 848.
However, while browsing through the racks, I noticed Secret Six 1
written by Gail Simone. Previously unfamiliar with the Secret Six, I
decided to quickly browse the pages. After a quick glance, I grabbed
Secret Six and my copy of Detective Comics, and I went to the register.
Sitting
down on the bus, I began to read Secret Six. Although I have never read
about some of these characters before, I fully enjoyed this book. Why?
Because it has all the makings of a good story. There's a powerful and
secretive mob boss, a plot to destroy one of the main characters, a
heart-broken lover, and BATMAN. Yes, you heard me right - Batman makes
an appearance and will appear in the next issue. Throw in some very
good art by Nicola Scott and Doug Hazlewood, a GREAT cover by Cliff
Chiang, and what you have is an awesome book.
I'm
not sure if I will buy this book each month, as previous runs of Secret
Six have been collected in trade paperbacks, and I might rather have
the trade on the shelf than the issues in a box. Nevertheless, I WILL
continue to read this book, and I recommend that you do the same. If
you are like me, and are unfamiliar with the characters, then go to
wikipedia - it's what I did. So, while you still have time, go get this
book!
