Walking Dead Tp Vol 09 Here We Remain

story ROBERT KIRKMAN
art & cover CHARLIE ADLARD

Price: $14.99

The shocking events of Made To Suffer reminded us that no story is off limits in this comic. Robert Kirkman is in complete control. And in my book, he just took The Walking Dead up a notch in this one.

In my experience, when one arc holds a massive twist and gets everyone excited, the next arc is bad.

If it’s that the writer has ran out of ideas, then everyone should just stop reading.

Or maybe the writer feels that he/she can just waist a bit of time and take a rest before the next big shock. That way, you are better not buying it until you here of another big shock and hop on for it.

Or perhaps the writer feels that they have to match there last arcs in levels of shock, or better it. The result is the book loses all structure, and becomes predictable, in the opposite way as the writer had feared.

But Kirkman keeps his cool. He is clearly not intimidated by change. Instead he revels in it. Robert deals with the events of the last arc in an intriguing way, and uses it to his advantage in relationship and plot development for the future.

The atmosphere in Here We Remain is as tense as ever. We get to learn a little more about the zombies as an added bonus in this book. Old characters come back and new ones are introduced.

The character development in this arc is concentrated on more than in the last. Rick's son Carl becomes very interesting in this book.

I know Adlard has improved a lot since the earlier issues of his run. But in every trade so far, I always have one instance where I mistake one character for another, which proves to be confusing.

Even with that horrible knit-pick of mine, the reason I give the art a 'four' is purely because of taste. I can't help but miss Tony Moore and have set him as the 'five' standard for this book, which is unfortunate. So ‘four’ it is.

That said, I still think the art is very strong and enjoyed it. I feel the art in this is a slight improvement on Made To Suffer. I think the lack of gore [well...by this books standards anyway!] in Here We Remain really helps the art. The pencils got tighter and the inks don't seem as blotchy. Cliff Rathburns grey tones seemed to have improved as well.

This arc only enhances the feelings on the last. Overall I would say The Walking Dead has got even better and Here We Remain is a great first story in a new era for this groundbreaking book.
