I am not sure if it was clearly laid out (maybe go to back the issues where he got the thing put in his hand), but I believe the signal device is stronger (or on at all) only when it is warm. That is why he put the dead hand in the microwave and why he was spraying freeze spray on his hand. I suppose this prevents Alpha-One from being confused by all his dead and cold previous handlers. The explosion I assumed was Alpha-one losing his shit. This shit loss continued as he flew right through that poor guy. Not sure how he talks his way out of that one, but we may be moving into his end game and he doesn't care.
