Don't you just hate it when you feel like you know something but you end up being totally wrong? That is perfect way to describe Green Lantern #29. Titled "Secret Origin" i was scared that this was going to end up just retelling the origin of Hal Jordan. But i was happily wrong and surprised.
The issue was very simply a story of Hal growing up but ended up being so much more. Johns does an amazing job driving this very drama oriented issue. You suddenly feel bad for Jordan's family and you feel his grief as he losses his mother. All of these being sides that havent really been looked into. Johns weaves these aspects flawlessly while moving the story in the right direction.
As far as the artwork is concerned: Wow. That was me showing a lack of words to describe it! I loved Ivan Reis in the Sinestro War. He stood strong and it could be claimed as his coming out party, but this issue he showed great grace in drawing normal everyday characters in an amazing light. His facial features gave great emotions and strongly conveyed Johns script.
This all came as a pleasant surprise. In an issue that came with low expectations, the story and artwork moved the story and i cant wait for the next!
