Supergirl #36

Well that was a quick read. It took me all of three minutes to read that book. And that's not even hyperbole. It literally will take me more time to write this review than it did for me to read the book I'm reviewing. There were 56 panels in this book that contained dialogue longer than a single word. (There were quite a few "NO!"s and "Kara!"s, so I didn't want to include those.) In the first ten pages of this book, only nine panels had a character speaking more than a single word. And, just for the hell of it, anyone want to guess how many panels had a character speak more than one sentence? ...

I'm not really complaining, since I don't like Supergirl at all, and was slightly ticked that I had to pick up these two issues in the first place. And I can safely say that I won't be buying another issue once the New Krypton crossover ends. Call me old fashioned, but when the archenemy of your title character (and a character who, theoretically, should be as powerful as Superman) is the Daily Planet Gossip Columnist, it's time to rethink that character's direction. And, maybe it's just because I'm not female, but the whole 'bitchy, disapproving mother' routine does nothing for me either.

Oh, and Supergirl won't talk to Clark (oh, excuse me, Kal...) about her problems, but she'll confide in a complete stranger who openly admits to having secrets to hide? When it's already clearly been established there's at least one traitor in Kandor? Come on, kid, that's pushing naivete to its limits there.

This issue was really just quick and dirty... we got a fight, a death, rising tensions, lots of distrust, and we're now just a tiny bit closer to the brink of one big ugly war. Not really an essential issue to read, but it certainly wasn't a useless tie-in either. I just really, really, REALLY hope Pa Kent wasn't killed in the Brainiac arc just so Superman and Supergirl could now have one more common, shared, tragic experience.
