Final Crisis #3 (OF 7)

Alright. I have no idea what's going on here. This is issue #3, and I can safely say that this is the third time I've finished the book completely unsure of what I had just read. I was skeptical about continuing the story after issue #2, but I read the first two issues (twice), and let me tell you, these babies are PACKED with nuances. That's right, nuances. Everywhere. Every panel and line of dialogue feels like it has the weight of something absolutely epic going on. I don't know if everything really is that important or not, like, say, a 'new' Aquaman thought mumbling "Article X?" to a dolphin or whale or some such creature. (By the way, is that the second Aquaman that was introduced in One Year Later? It looks way more like Aquaman Classic. Or are we on Aquaman III already? Also, does he own the world's largest seahorse or is he just the smallest Atlantean in the sea?) It really is exciting to have a comic book that I can read (and WANT to read) multiple times, looking for clues and intricacies I missed the first time. (I haven't read this issue a second time yet, but if it holds true to the first two, I missed a lot.) Especially without having to wait for it to come out in trade to enjoy reading it a second time. The only drawback to this is, like I said, I still generally have no idea what's going on. I get the gist of what happened - Darkseid unleashed the Anti-Life Equation on the world, and Barry and Wally ran into the future where everyone succumbed to it. (Somebody please please please correct me if I'm wrong on this.) But that could have happened in one, maybe two issues. Now, Morrison has all these plot threads that aren't lining up in any sensible fashion, and he really needs to get his ass in gear and start tying them together. Otherwise, if all of those things are unrelated, he's using entirely too many unnecessary characters and scenes just to give the plot the epic, universal scope of a 'Crisis.' (I'm also slightly concerned, with Barry and Wally in the 'post-apocalyptic/Apokoliptic future' that everything that happens in this series will be undone by say, someone firing another time bullet back in time to stop Darkseid before he does any of this. I'm really really hoping that's not the case, but I have a bad feeling that one of our two remaining heroic Flashes (*cough* Wally *cough*) is about to become a sacrificial lamb.) Anyway, Morrison has done a nice job setting up this story, but he's going to have a hell of a time pulling it all together in four issues. From reading his past work, he's either going to do it masterfully, and blow all of comicdom's collective minds, or he's going to crash and burn so spectacularly that the ghost of J'onn J'onzz will brave the flames to personally strangle the man. Either way, it'll be great fun to watch. (Side note: Doesn't it seem like Grant Morrison has an amazing amount of career credibility at stake for the end of 2008? Between Final Crisis and Batman, RIP, two pretty risky and controversial stories, he's either going to end up looking like a visionary or a total hack. He needs to knock at least one of these stories out of the park, or else Geoff Johns is going to have to write ALL of DC's books from now on.)
