I have the same problem with Gerard Way as I have with Grant Morrison. I never have any idea what the hell is going on. The difference is, with Way, I still enjoy myself. With Morrison, I'm always worrying: This is way over my head. If I knew 30 years of continuity this would make sense to me. With Way, I'm skipping along, getting into the fun that I'm sure he and Gabriel Ba are having. Like in issue 5, I started out wondering what the hell we were doing in 'Nam. Then we had a giant mummy and I just rolled with it. As soon as The Seance or Spaceboy enter a scene, I'm happy (I think I should really like Kraken too, but I don't quite get his character yet), and Way's characters are really brought home by Ba's off-of-center art.

I agree with whole-heartedly with your comparison to Morrison. I still have no idea what this story arc is about but I continue to enjoy the book (wish I could say the same for Batman RIP).
