Unthinkable is a story about all the little things that go wrong in life.
After the 9/11 attacks on the USA and the death of his brother, Alan Ripley, a prolific military novelist is recruited into a Think Tank designed specifically to consider the thoerically possible, plausable and logical ways a terrorists could attack the USA and distrub the gentle balance of the planet as a whole. Not the comic book villian plots but genuine attacks that could actually happen. Years after it's discontinuation is the apocolypically dangerous hypothesiei of the Think Tank is put into action. Biological, Economic and Political catastrophe erupts. Alan also suffers personal crisis amongst the actual armageddon. Deftly woven though the issue's plotting, Alan endures a failed relationship, creative draught and a loss of purpose.
Mark Sable's storytelling is solid though out the issue and is very clearly highlighted with one clever device. Alan's swift fall from grace is depicted in one page of interlaced dialogue before a timejump to reveal Alan's new life and the issue's conclusion.
Shades of Tommy Lee Edwards' moody art are reflected in Juan Manuel Tumburus' work. Wonderful pages of expressive, darkly realistic art capture the various mood of the book. Scenes meant to contian menace contain menace; similarly with melencholy or humour.
A great idea for a book about great ideas.
