Oh my. There is just so much good to say about this book, it's hard to know where to start.
The introduction of the Blue Lanterns seems as good a place as any. I loved the character design of Saint Walker in the Rage of the Red Lanterns, and his graceful sinewy body seems to perfectly mirror the beatific demeanor Johns has gifted this Lantern. The confrontation between Walker and Kilowog showed off the best of both characters.
Does anyone remember Green Lantern: Mosaic from the early 90's? John Stewart's ring was temporarily corrupted by the spirit of Sinestro residing in the central battery on Oa, which he describes as "something red". Well, here Walker says John's soul "is still flickering with the red flame of rage". He could simply be referring back to John's sense of loss for Katma Tui, but if there's any hint he's alluding back to GL Mosaic - a reference going back over 15 years - I will wet my fanboy pants!
The planet Odym is one of the lushest double page spreads I have seen, and Warth the elephant is a worthy second Blue Lantern.
I'm relishing the prospect of a significant role for the Blue Lanterns in Blackest Night, and hope they stick around after that story too, but perhaps there's something just a little too perfect about them... time will tell!
In other news, Fatality returns as a Star Sapphire and Atrocitus finds Sinestro's weak spot and looks set to exploit it.
Apparently Blackest Night doesn't kick off until July 2009. If Geoff Johns ups the ante every month 'til then in the way he has done this month, the great war of light will be a truly incredible DCU event.
