This turned out to be quite the controversial issue. People for the most part seemed to either like it or hate it with little middle ground. I fall on the like it side of things, but I definitely think there is room to approve.
First off I like the intros to each character. Each provides a quick look at who that person is, and where they are now. Donna's intro is a little confusing of how it fits in with Countdown, but I don't let myself get to hung up with it. Also, I believe this was supposed to come out a couple months ago, but injuries in Churchill's hand delayed it. The issue then goes on to show how each one has come under attack. We only get to see the outcome of Nightwing's attack, but I think the reason is that the attacks are not what is important in this issue, it is why they were attacked. While seeing the conclusion would have made it less jarring, I understand it being left out.
Next we see the group gather at ground zero of the Titans East attack. Again, this special came out a while ago, but if this issue hadn't have been delayed because of injury it would have been less time and flowed better. As it is I'm glad Winick let most of the Titan's East live, we only have one fatality from all this. Finally we have the villain reveal who is an old Titan's staple. While some feel it to be cliche, I think facing an old threat like this is a great way to bring the gang back together.
The art is a style that you either loved or hated. I don't mind the musclebound art of Churchill. I do wish he would draw women a little more anatomically correct, but over all I liked his style. I also really liked the coloring, especially in the Nightwing segment. All this is slightly inconsequential as a new artist comes onboard next issue. So, if you hated this because of the art, give it another chance.
Overall a competent first issue that provides the setup needed. Next issue will be the real test if this series will be any good or not.
