This series is in a interesting place as the main story has finished 3 issues ago, and a new ongoing is starting in November. Until then IDW added four issues to All Hail Megatron to fill in some gaps in the story and provide background on the characters involved. This issue focused on Kup and Perceptor. The Kup story was very good and connected his earlier Spotlight issue to his appearance in the series. For a reader like me who has followed the entire IDW Transformers line it is great to see cases like this where it all ties together. The big twist of the the motivations behind Kup's revival was shocking and really changed my whole perception of a character. The Perceptor showed how he changed from the science/tech guy to a sharpshooter. This was a story that showed how much a traumatic event can change a person's life. Both tales involved more mature and deeper stories than the films, and showed that a Transformers story does not have to be a mindless action piece, but can have mature themes that make you think. Each of the two features had its own artist and both of them were able to tell the story in a easy to follow manner. Some of the past Transformers artists have drawn the robots in a way where it is hard to tell them apart, but that is not a problem here. The Kup story is told with a more exagerated cartoony style that works but feels a little off with the subject manner. The Perceptor tale on the other hand has a matte digital color look, but the artist uses very tight lines that plays up the war angle of the story. neither artist blows it out of the water, but they do tell a servicable story. I would say I prefer the Perceptor art because it does feel more appropriate for the subject matter. Overall I am enjoying these fill-in issues, which provide solid background while we wait for the ongoing to start.
