I wasn't surprised that the phone was a hallucination, I suspected that as soon as he "heard" it but Carl didn't - and I think there was no sound effect for the phone, either. But it being Lori was a shocking guy punch that was far more interesting.

I was thinking the same thing. I also thought the phone would be a device to introduce a new cast of characters. But instead Kirkman uses it to explore Rick's metal state. Great read.
