I don't like hokiness. Throwback comics with cartoonish morals, clear black and white good and evil characters where very plot device is spelled out for you, telegraphed, faxed, where the author repeatedly slaps you in the face with transparent metaphors and shouts "DO YOU GET IT? DO YOU GET IT YET?"
And Green Lantern is definitely a bit of a hokey throwback. But, in Johns' hands, a story that I immediately want to dismiss: a cosmic story involving wars between people with different colored rings, is impossible to step away from. Part of what helps Johns is Tan's pencils and Glapion's inks, which veguely resemble the recent Marvel approach to interior art. Lots of shadows and black panels to make the lantern colors stand out.
Also, the cover rules. Oh, and Johns, "I GET IT!!!" and I want more.
