This is a superb re-imagining of Bill Everett-type Namor stories from the Timely era. Milligan has ginned up a fantastically original story of a professional legend debunker on a perilous quest to prove that there is no Sub-Mariner, and it's a great way to explore what Namor was like when he was singular among early comic book characters. The menace and mystery that surrounds Subby is thick, truly in line with the threat-to-mankind he was originally portrayed as. The fact that it mostly takes place in 1940s-era submarines is just an aquatic bonus. Esad Ribic is something of an unknown quantity, as I've not seen as much of his work in the world, but there is a wonderful impressionist pastel thing going on with the art; the lack of pencil-and-ink linework suits this piece very well. Considering this is a story I heard nothing about before ticking it off my pull list, I'm happy to say I'll be back in a month for issue numero dos.
