Oh man, my kidneys hurt! Jeph Loeb has illegally punched me below the belt. Is this a cheep, lazy gimmick lamenting the demise of the never realized Buffy animated series? Yes. That however did not dull the blow of this trip down memory lane. This issue had all the familiar season 1-2 era Buffy narrative constructions. Gilles gives the exposition, the scoobies make fun of him, Buffy would rather go to a party, Xander would rather be with Buffy, Willow would prefer to be with Xander, and Cordelia is queen bitch. Awe, it's so CUTE!!!!! If you read the issue without future Buffy's narration this was wonderful nostalgia. Loeb does a good (not great) job with all of these dear character's voices, and the art is a riproaring Saturday Morning good time. But the real K.O. punch was Wight, Beavers, and Van Wyk's rendition of Joyce Summers. I choked. Yes all the other cartooning was great fun and everyone looked good but the design on Buffy's mom was WAY TOO CLOSE to Kristine Sutherland for comfort. Any issue that can make me fight off embarassing giggles and secret sobs gets my pick!
Bonus points for hitting Cordelia with a boot while riding a dragon bare back.

i dont normally read buffy, but ill give the loeb issue a chance. till then, im waiting for Vaughn to write another faith story
