This is a very bias review, let me put this out here. I am a huge fan of Hellboy, and I think he has quickly become my favorite hero in the last five years. I never read this stuff when it first came out; but thanks to Del Toro's great adaptation, I was intrigued enough to pick old trades and have just been a fan since then. What makes Hellboy such a great series is that it's just that simple of a story. He goes to a place, perferably Europe, investigates and fights mystical/mythological creatures, and have good laughs for the entire story.
Here we get a slight difference with Hellboy as we see him in the United States. We dont usually see him in the states, even though we as a country has a good amount of urban legends and creatures Mignola can use. This story is pretty entertaining, it feels more creepy then others cause of this Crooked Man nonsense. I never heard of this legend, but damn Mignola cause now I'm afriad to go to West Virginia.
The story is creepy because of the fantastic art by Richard Corben. I loved the Makoma story because of the art, and because it was so different then anything I've seen by Mignola and other artists. It's simple to look at, hell it reminds me of Bruce Timm's style cause of the big chins and heavy action. But somehow Corben adds a level of creepiness and some of the shots of this creature and other beings are just fucking scary!
Mignola has hit yet another Home Run with his creation. Year in and Year out I have enjoyed as many stories Mignola can write in his own universe. With the second film coming up shortly, this is a great start to read any Hellboy story. Cause it's so simple to get into any story with very info of backstory, I say this is a must buy.
