It is borderline startling that Brubaker is actually improving on this title after the amazing Death of Captain America arc. I'm not saying that I think this arc is better (though it is damned good), but that we continue to see his craft and handling of this specific title and its characters honed to a finer and finer degree. Brubaker skillfully jumps from the past to the present to tell this story, all the while making it feel inviting for the uninitiated Cap fan. I appreciate that, as I came to this title later than I should have. I have found that neither does it spoon-feed me a plot, nor does it require an encyclopedic knowledge of Cap's past to enjoy. During the Death arc, I had some confusion about who was who and what significance they held. I feel that the (re)introduction of Batroc, as well as this new adversary (though I don't have a name yet, I know why he's important) have been handled in a much more approachable way. As others have commented, Ross' art is getting better as well. If this creative team continues at the clip they're going at, nothing will stop this book.
