As if it hasn't been said enough, Grant Morrison is really showing his range with this title. Maybe more appropriately, he's showing OFF his range. One can't help but be struck as how, simultaneously, everything in this story is both creatively brilliant and makes absolute sense. Dick/Batman's first case being inexplicably linked to circus hooligans? Simple, elegant and fascinating, and coupled with some other brilliant plot points to create a veritable breeding ground for character development. How will Dick handle Damian being Damian? His own misgivings about his authority? How to play the "role" of Batman? How to deal with the clumsiness of wearing a cape? None of these ideas are a much of a stretch at all, but in Morrison's hands, it all feels very fresh. Everything is crisp and intelligent, right down to Gordon's reaction to the new Batman, Damian's interrogation techniques and the conversation between Dick and Alfred. And how about that art? Quitely provides us with some big pages here, and although it makes the story read a little quick, it's all gorgeous. Of course, I'd rather the creative team fill space and get the book out on time, so feeling like it ended "soon" isn't a major strike against the book. In fact, it just makes me want more.
Story: 5 - Excellent
