Batman And Robin #1

It's times like this when I'm reminded of how much range Morrison has.  This isn't one where you need to bust out Wikipedia to know what the hell is going on.  It's all right there.  The really amazing part is that although this is much more straightforward storytelling, it's just as layered and nuanced as the more complicated tales Morrison tends to tell.  Quitely carries a lot of this, as he should.  Morrison chose to use fewer words and let the images do their work, because there's no other artist like Quitely.  I was especially impressed by the use of sound effects as part of the image, and how it adds even more dynamism to already dynamic art.  Shockingly, I really liked Damien's characterization here, as well as his interplay with our new Batman.  If I can complain about anything, it's that there wasn't enough Dick.  *cough*  I mean, uh, Batman.  But then again, Morrison has less experience writing him than any other established character within this title, and with Tomasi's fantastic characterization throughout his run on Nightwing, I'm all for a slow burn.  I have a feeling that when it comes time for this new Batman to really show that he's his own man, this measured approach will make it all the more striking.
