the one-line pitch is, "what if the beatles were superheroes?" that was enough to get me to try out the first issue of this 6-part miniseries.
this was a middling book; it's very much a first issue, setting the stage for all that will happen. but it jumps time and scene enough to make for a rather choppy read. we're introduced to "the mates" - the british super-team who captured the world's imagination in the 60s - and at the same time to a present day filmmaker related to one of the team beginning to move towards making a documentary about them.
this first issue was just too crowded - we see the mates in action in 1968, then we see them several years earlier, as they form the team - then we see one of the members leaving, and another being recruited (already, in the first issue?!?) - and all this is inter-cut with present-day material. i could follow it, but again, the choppyness hurt the story.
the book looks great - Fabry does strong work here - and it has me curious enough to buy book 2. but at
the same time, i couldn't strongly recommend it, as it seems as likely to
turn out bad as good.
