Nyx No Way Home #1 (OF 6)

Years ago a really promising series started. NYX was written by Joe Quesada and drawn by Joshua Middleton. Eventually Quesada's duties as Editor in Chief wound up complicating the release schedule and Middleton left Marvel and another artist (the talented but stylistically different Robert Terenashi) was brought in to finish what had suddenly become a 7 issue mini-series. Years passed, I almost forgot about it. But opening the pages of Marjorie Liu's take on NYX with No Way Home #1 immediately brought me back into the world of teenage runaway Kiden Nixon. A mutant on the streets of New York City's Mutant District. Time has clearly passed and the connections to the previous series are pretty strong with almost all of the original characters returning for the new mini, but what has changed is that the story seems to be more about the characters and less about powers. To be honest I think that the first NYX mini-series was the last good thing that Quesada worked on in any capacity as a creative voice but it's clear that what he created has a lasting quality. First time comic writer and New York Times Bestseller Marjorie Liu has a talent for these voices and a talent for this world that makes it seem like you are reading something familiar, in a very good way, despite it's newness. Kalman Andrasofszky is a talent who works far too infrequently, and has become much more well known as a cover artist and artist who often needs help finishing interiors, and his work here in these pages show a promise that is in many ways incomparable to the rest of the artistic field with one exception ... original series artist Joshua Middleton. So, check this series out and if nothing else pay attention to the opinions expressed online and find the trade when it hits the shelves early next year.
