I have a few words about this book. Nazis. Reds. Demon-child (fire-proof obviously). Vampires. Head in Jar. Mechanical Apes. German-speaking chimp with temper. One rocketship loaded up. One parachute. Spagetti-loving Hellbaby.
There. Just go buy the damn book already.
I am compelled to say that these are sweet times for Hellboy fans. This creative team of Dysart and Azaceta are a great addition to the Hellboy-verse. What we essentially have here is a 3rd ongoing title (even though it is numbered as part of the BPRD title). This series has taken the "Year One" formula and applied it to an organization in its formative years. I can't help but think that this feels like a Sandman Mystery Theatre-type book. Instead of a Wesley Dodds, we have a Prof. Bruttenholm. Sure, this world may be a little more unbelievable than SMT, but that being said, a lot of people have a belief in "things that go bump in the night." Be it ghosts or as such. The opportunity is here for some great Bruttenholm tales. Dysart has already revealed that plans are in motion for BPRD: 1947 and BPRD: 1948. This makes me very excited. I hope that Azaceta remains a part of this. This last issue proved to be his best work to date yet (the rocketship sequence!). Sweet times for Hellboy fans indeed. It could only get better if Mignola would draw a story again. What? He is? A one-shot? (read the letters page)
