Here's the thing about Bendis, when he gets a character he really gets them and it's beautiful. Bendis writes Ares the way he should be written. He isn't rage and violence, he's tactical and big and a brute but he is aware that he's a brute. He has no misgivings about what his role in all of this is. He is aware that he might be on the wrong side but he's also aware that, for the foreseeable future, his side is winning. The scene between Ares and Fury was touchng and poignant and it fit like a glove in this story.
The art from Deodato was very impressive, especially the panel layouts which I am finding facinating lately. The scene of Ares following Phobos and Daisy was laid out perfectly and really built the tension over the two page spread.
The opening and the closing of this issue felt like Ellis T-bolts which just gave me warm fuzzies. All and all this book was my Pick of the Week because I was expecting a fight and it gave me an argument between two generals about the whats best for one of their soldiers. This issue made me really see Ares as a father, which is something I could never really grasp before.
Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
All good points Roi, good review. I glad the normal creative team is back. The only thing that might have been off putting was that this felt like a Dark Avengers/Secret Warriors crossover issue. I've been reading both so no problem here but other's might have a problem.
