Batgirl #1

      I was a little disappointed with this issue. Though I loved Cassandra Cain as Batgirl (even since they've mishandled her after Infinite Crisis), I went into this issue with an open mind. I promised myself I wouldn't let my preconceived notions cloud my judgement.
 The issue starts out with a random street race in Gotham with Batgirl kicking butt. Sloppy, yet still kicking butt. The new Batman and Robin even judge her from afar. Miller then gives us the big reveal of the new Batgirl being Stephanie Brown.
     The rest of the issue jumps back and forth between Barbara's inner monologue and The Spoiler's inner monologue(she's whining about the whole double life thing....geez, girl, just quit or fake your death again). Little to nothing important really happens. They also introduce a new police guy on the Gotham PD force whom the new Batgirl rescues...its pretty predictable that there will be a relationship between these two in the future. The issue ends with Barbara confronting Stephanie Brown.
    The issue was pretty solid, yet there was nothing fresh to this #1. I don't see this issue really attracting many readers unless they are hardcore Barbara or Spoiler fans. Even the way Spoiler inherits the mantle is pretty bland and uninspiring. As Homer Simpson would say, "Default! The two greatest words in the english language!"
    I find it really sad that female characters are unable to truly carry their own title in comic books. The only current female superhero that is halfway decently handled is Supergirl.
    On the art front, I can't say I have much to complain about.
    I think I may stick around for an issue or two to see if things become more exciting, otherwise, I'm dropping this.

P.S. Wasn't Cassandra Cain adopted into the Wayne family at the end of her last miniseries? How come none of the new Wayne family cares about what happened to her. She acts totally out of character in this issue.
