I'm not a "Marvel guy". I barely know that a Skrull is an alien and not, as I might have guessed, a horribly infectious STD (Oh no! I've got Skrulls in my downstairs place!). I had also, before this series, never heard of Captain Britain. But none of that matters because, by golly, this book is awesome!
The characters are interesting, the dialogue is sharp, and it all seems to sit just far enough towards the edge of the rest of the goings on in the Merry Marvel Madhouse that I don't feel like I need to know anything other than what's on the page.
My favourite aspect of this series is the way in which it balances the humour, the drama, and the Super-Magic-Hero-Men-in-Tights of it all. There are some genuinely funny moments in this, but there are also some moments that make you want to put down your tea, find the nearest Union Jack and God Bless the Queen.
Oh, and my god this book is pretty.
