Invincible #51

Another way solid issue of Invincible. Is it a good jumping on point? Yes. Does it feel like a new status quo? Yes it does.

I'm going to take a scatter shot approach and just throw some thoughts out at you:

The new costume feels a little wrong, but it's written as feeling a little wrong, so that's okay. It makes Invincible feel like a much darker character, which is something the last issue was pointing to. And I liked how Kirkman manage put some of creative team's feelings about the costume into Art the costume guy's mouth. I liked his comment about the old costume's colors clashing with Omni-Boy's, er excuse me, Kid Omni-Man's.

Which leads me to a few other things. Oliver was always pretty awesome, but now as Kid Omni-Man he's even more awesome. Great costume. Great name. And Ottley makes him look so cool in the fight scene. I'm glad that he's becoming a bigger part of the book.

I also like the Schism between the Guardians of the Globe and the (for lack of another name) Teen Team. Good to see Darkwing join the Guardians. It makes them a slightly sketchier group.

And that last page. I was thinking, "Finally." Kirman's got so many subplots flying around you can easily forget a few of them. It was good to see this one re-emerge. And the shock of the reveal is not at all the reason I'm excited about this. I'm excited about this because I can trust that Kirkman will do something unexpected with it over the coming issues.

Invincible is a comic that always has me excited for the future. I can hardly wait for the next fifty issues.
