Final Crisis #1 (OF 7)

Review by Marbles:

Final Crisis #1 (OF 7)

Written by Grant Morrison
Art and covers by J.G. Jones

Size: 40 Pages

Price: $3.99

Let me say from the start I'm much more a Marvel reader than a DC one, but I thought I'd give this a try given the buzz & the writer (I'm enjoying All-Star Sups & The Filth/Flex Mentallo are some of my fave all-time comics).

But I just didn't understand it. I didn't know who was in it, what was happening, why it was happening and why I should care. So that just made it dull.

I'm not sure how much DC lore you need to know to make this book interesting, but clearly its a hell of a lot more than I know.

Story: 1 - Poor Art: 3 - Good

Yeah, I agree. Are DC readers having the same problem with Secret Invasion and Civil War? Bendis HAS been laying a lot of groundwork over the years, so if you haven't read that stuff, how hard is it to follow the Skrull invasion?

Heck of a cover though, huh?

Yeah I was unimpressed too. I'm a big Morrison fan and know a decent amount of DC continuity, but I had little idea why I was supposed to care about the scenes I was presented with. None of this seemed all that special. Supervillains team up all the time. The earth is threatened in 30 different ways in 30 different superhero comics every month. And haven't the New Gods already died? The experience of this first issue was like reading a middle chapter from a 1000-page overrated postmodern novel. The caveman stuff seemed like its the only innovative concept here.

Oh, God, it's going to be that issue of 'Powers' I didn't understand all over again.

Hal Jordan cover or not, this can wait for the trade.

Regarding RipperSix's comments/question: I am more of a "DC kinda guy" but I did pick up Secret Invasion. I do read some Marvel books, but more on the fringe. I skipped Civil War and WWHulk and most of the X-Men stuff (to give u an idea: I read She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, X-Factor, Avengers Initiative, and New Avengers, but not some of the others.)  SO...yes I was kinda clueless about Secret Invasion. #1 was good because of the set-ups and action...#2 did leave me dry...but i'm going to continue to read it. From what I'm hearing about FC...this issue was more of a set-up (good or bad depending on your view of Morrison)...but I think we need at least the second issue before we can pass "Final" judgement...just MHO.

@ Asdfman That was uncalled for. People can have differences of opinions about comic books without resorting to name calling.  And using "queer" as an insult is just wrong.

@flapjazz I haven't read the book yet, I will later today, but cavemen have been a part of Powers for awhile, as ohcaroline pointed out.  From what I hear their use here isn't that different than in Powers, but what I hear could be wrong.

@RipperSix I'd be interested in hearing what non-Marvel readers think about how easy Secret Invasion is to understand as well.  I'm interested to see how easy this is for me, since I have been buying about six DC books a month for the past few years and yet was totally baffled by DC Universe 0.

@Asdfman -  What, did you write that post during fourth period computer class?  Seriously, grow the hell up.  Also, tell your mom that she needs to update NetNanny.  We have no time for children here.

@Asdfman - Can we just get this guy off of the site? I am not much of a DC reader myself, but I do not appreciate this childish, offensive namecalling.

@Asdfman - comic books are entertainment, try enjoying them and get back to us.

Don't feed the trolls.   If there's no response, there's no reason to be a prick.

this was a DENSE issue. there's a whole lot of junk going on, and i think it does hurt things...so i have to agree somewhat. that said, it's issue one - everything doesn't have to be laid out on the table yet.

@RipperSix - I've only been reading superhero books for 2 years and yes, Marvel continuity is every bit as confusing as DC's. Both require a certain amount of looking up things on Wikipedia or going back to read specific trades, depending on how much background you want. I haven't read Final Crisis yet, so am unable to comment on the actual issue. It's definitely the first thing I'm reading when I get home from the LCS, though! Really looking forward to it.

Yeah, that was random.

@ASDFman - You inverted the H and the T in "worthless", so it read "worhtless".  Watch out for that next time.  Also, you incorrectly capitalized "you.  Just FYI!
