Have you ever read an issue that made you drop an entire series? Well...this isn't the case. I loved Immortal Weapons #3. I was hooked from the moment I turned to page 3 and realized this story will not have a cliche' happy ending. And like a kid in a toy store I left my LCS with a big grin on my face and a skip to my step.
The Art
The collaboration between the pencils, inks and colors would hardly make you think this was a Marvel comic. In fact I wouldn't have known if not for the logo. When I opened this comic I FELT like I was actually IN china during the opium war. For those of you who know me realize that's a difficult conceit for me to make. One page in particular involved the opium room and the intense colors used to project a dire situation.
The Story
I have to be honest, in a panel where you're supposed to feel extremely shocked and sad, the caption on the final page reading "The Cut of Continuity" had caused induced laughter. Nothing was rushed, point A to point B made sense, the character moments had me cheering and also hesitating to look at the next panel. This issue was basically what G.I. Joe should have been (but I digress). This story has got me wondering why this creative team hadn't delivered in the previous issue. In fact I'm wondering if they'll be as good in the future. I suppose time will tell.
And as if Marvel decided this great story wasn't enough, they fed me a tale of a current event involving Danny Rand which continued off from the previous Immortal Weapons issue (if I'm not mistaken). That follow-up story, unfortunately, didn't live up to the previous which was understandable because it was a tough act to follow. I mean when you produce art like the first story you can't produce art like in the 2nd one and think it's up to par. I don't even think it's a taste in preferential style but a visual look at quality. But enough with the negatives...
Overall this issue rejuvinated me for the rest of the mini series. They'll have my wallet for a bit.
