Marvel 1985 #1 of 6
To
be honest, I didn't want this book. I love Mark Millar's work on CIVIL
WAR and the new ongoing series KICK-ASS, but I really didn't think that
I was up for yet another cardstock limited series... So naturally, my
comic-loving uncle gets himself a copy. And also gets myself a copy,
surprising me. I went home and read this book, almost hoping that I
didn't like it so that I wouldn't have to invest in another limited
series (with seven ongoing titles and two expensive limited series
already going, well... money becomes an issue here).
I loved it.
Like
Millar's KICK-ASS, 1985 takes place in the real world. The primary
character is a young boy with family issues and a love of comic books.
The year is 1985, and the SECRET WAR is underway in the Marvel U.
The
story pretty much centers on this: the Marvel Universe has just entered
the real world. The villains got here first, namely: Doctor Doom,
Magneto, the Vulture, Mole Man, the Red Skull, and who knows how many
others. Upon seeing this, our comic-loving protagonist (Toby) flees the scene,
only to run into what he at first thought was a tree... but what turned
out to be none other than the INCREDIBLE HULK.
Mark
Millar's writing here is nothing short of masterful, and perfectly
complemented by the art of Tommy Lee Edwards. In fact, this creative
team is nothing less that AMAZING! The first issue has really reminded
me of why I fell in love with comics to begin with. To see how, you'll
just have to check it out yourself! The price is $4.00 US, due to a
cardstock cover and it being an amazing book. It is part 1 of 6,
meaning you've still got time to buy a copy (as well as issue 2). So what are you waiting
for? Go get it!
