All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder Vol.1 HC

As of July 5th, I do not actually own this hardcover due to my local shops not having it in stock. As a result, I cannot say anything about the hardcover's quality. Something still needs to be said, however, about the nine issues collected within it.

I'll be the first person to tell someone that I think this series' creators, writer Frank Miller and artist Jim Lee, are both highly over-rated. Especially Miller. I say this because I find his 'greatest works' (The Dark Knight Returns, and Sin City) to be mediocre at best. I realize that comics aren't meant to impress, but I think it can't hurt to be impressed by a book you don't necessarily like. With the exception of Batman: Year One, Frank Miller has not impressed or entertained me with his previous works. Neither has Jim Lee.

There's only one phrase that describes how I feel about All Star Batman and Robin:
I friggin' love this book!

High points: Batman's insane, Robin's a smart-ass, Superman isn't all that bright, Green Lantern's more dim that Superman, and the art is beautiful.

And the infamous quote: "I'm the Goddamn Batman."

One of the best things going for this book is that it can be funny, scary, serious, and beautiful all in the same issue. Readers who made it to issue nine will know this is true. The lack of outside DC continuity is also a huge plus.

This is really the best Batman story I've ever read, and it almost hurts to say so, due to my dislike of the creators' other work. Miller and Lee have really found something special with this book, and I'm glad I made myself read it. Words of advice for anyone half-interested in reading it: ignore the critics and the fans alike. Go into it with an open mind... and ready for some crazy reading.

It has been released. I've been to three different comic shops that had it on the shelves.

well, thank god there's someone else who is enjoying this book as well! i'm loving the insane batman who's pushing everything to the limits and it takes the likes of this now orphan child to make him realize whats wrong in how he goes about things. yeah, it does have that gritty, hard-boiled aspect like sin city, but it's not wrong for this character.

this is maybe my favorite interpretation of batman but mainly b/c there have been so many other ones to choose from and this one is so far from heroic it's funny.
