I suppose this is a silly reason to pick this book as my Pick of the Week over the other, amazing books I bought this week, but any time I squeak "Look a UNICORN!" I have to give a good think to it's awesomeness. I just started rereading Lucifer and I have to say that Mike Carey loves literature just as much as he loves religious iconography and mythology. My Local Shop ran out of the first issue before I got there, and while I was anxious about whether I could understand anything that's going on, I risked it. And I am so glad I did. Yes, without the first part of this book, I had no idea how Thomas got sent to the hospital, or why everyone thinks he can heal them, but I did okay. I also love how even though Thomas is kind of a dick, and I have only the faintest idea of why he's a dick, I get the feeling it's well deserved. I guess what I'm saying is that like in Lucifer where occasionally I would get the feeling that I had no idea what's going on I knew they'd explain it and it'd be awesome.
And the art! Holy crap, the art was amazing. And the lettering! Readable, unique and artistic, a mix that shouldn't be hard, but let's be honest, sometimes Thor's caligraphy can leave you squinting a little bit. But mostly? The Unicorn.
Story: 5 - Excellent
