User Reviews Are Still Being Spotlighted
4 Posted on May 19, 2008 in articles by Josh Flanagan |There is little time to waste, so let's get on with it. You are all putting out so many reviews that it's getting harder to comb through them all, so I got a couple suggestions via Twitter to help out this week.
- RolandofGilead was quite taken with B.P.R.D. 1946 #5, as well he should have been. Story 5/Art 4
I have a few words about this book. Nazis. Reds. Demon-child (fire-proof obviously). Vampires. Head in Jar. Mechanical Apes. German-speaking chimp with temper. One rocketship loaded up. One parachute. Spagetti-loving Hellbaby.
There. Just go buy the damn book already.
Let start off by saying that I'm completely ignorant of every aspect of this series. I didn't read any of the Annihilation titles and most of these characters I have never heard of until today. And yet, I still had an absolute blast reading it. It's big, crazy sci-fi done right. It's smart, funny, fast paced, but not so out there that readers are completely lost as to what's going on.
I think reviewing a single issue of a Morrison comic can be a tricky thing. They are often deceptively quick reads, and his transitions from scene to scene can be jarring. My first impression of this issue fell right into line with that statement. But then when I flipped back through it, I was taken back with just how much Morrison accomplished with this initial issue of the RIP storyline.
This is a quick read, even for something that's only twenty pages long, but it's a lot of fun. It's a pretty simple in some ways, just another man vs. giant killer larvae thing, but Ottley is ridiculously inventive, and there isn't much in this story that isn't unique, surprising and awesome.

Of the stuff that I read I agree on all fronts. I'm pissed that I dropped B.R.P.D. though. Thanks RolandofGilead! :)
Posted by Neb on 05/19/08 at 05:05 PMNo prob. ;D It was so damn good that I finally wrote a review here. The comment about Morrison is spot on. You must read his stuff very slowly or you just might miss something.
Posted by RolandofGilead on 05/20/08 at 03:46 PMI still can't believe that you guys read my Last Defenders review on the air XD

One of my favorite things about the user reviews are the accounts of unexpected discovery. It's always fun to read about a pleasant surprise, about expectations surpassed. So it was good to read about Neb's experience with Guardians of the Galaxy.
I think I'm on the exact same page as Daryl. Morison definitely benefits from repeat readings. Easter eggs abound.
But I think Neal's review of Death Grub features the week's best line: "...just another man vs. giant killer larvae thing..." Only in comics...haha.
