The Best of the Week in... Covers (07/08/09)

In a light week of comics, there wasn't a whole lot to choose from. So which covers really impressed this week?

Green Lantern #43
Cover by Doug Mahnke

When looking over this week's list of comics this was the cover that leapt out at me and the one that stuck in my mind. So I guess you could say that it was the best cover of the week. I'm a big fan of Doug Mahnke and what he has done here is craft a cover that is not only a character spotlight but it tells a story. He's not only holding flowers but he's practically caressing the headstone. The Black Hand loves death.

Dark X-Men: The Beginning #1
Cover by Jae Lee

I really don't get enough Jae Lee art in my life. Ever since he sequestered himself over in, what I assume to be, the very lucrative Stephen King corner of Marvel he has basically dropped off of my radar. Seeing this cover not only brought a wave of "that's the stuff" satisfaction over me, but it really reminded me why I dig his work so much. His work has an ethereal quality that no one else really has. His characters seem to have an almost dreamlike texture to them.

The Unwritten #3
Cover by Yuko Shimizu

This is the second time in a row that the cover for The Unwritten has been selected and I think that says a lot about Yuko Shimizu's strong sense of design. It's not just the intricate cables and wires that fill most of the cover, it's their bold coloring -- the red, white and blue really pop against the black background. This is another cover that I stopped to examine on my trip down the comics page on Monday.

Those are my favorites. What are yours?

i just love the differences in the way Emma stands and the way Dagger stands on the Dark X-Men cover. Lots of very cool body language on that cover

The Unwritten. now that is a cover! I have no idea what is going on bur I dont care. It's bright and colorful but it also creeps me out as well.

Someone else mentioned it on another website but: Really? You really put that X logo on Dagger in that position? Really?

The Unwritten cover is soooo easy to figure out, he is giving his very ill grandpa a nice mind massage.

I really enjoy the cover to Unwritten #3. I look forward to reading it.

Nice, I like all of those, even though I don't read them all.  I've always loved Jae Lee art.

no red robin 2?  that was an awesome cover

Though otherwise great, I was disappointed by the Wednesday Comics cover, which seemed to lack originality when compared to what an insanely original book it is.  Even in the context of how they chose to present it, it was odd that they put Kamandi, Hawkman, and Deadman on the front and left Flash, Sgt. Rock and Metamorpho (which comes with that crossover "Gaiman" name attached to it) for the back.

World of New Krypton #5 was quite good as well.

On that X-Men cover Dagger has a very unfortunate placing of her team insignia.

Good picks.

Red Robin was kind of cool I thought. I also liked the B.P.R.D.'s cover.

@MikeFarley: Thank you!!

Out of all my books this week the only cover I thought was really good was the Unrwitter #3. Nothing else really impressed me.

I love Namor's rock-star pose on the X-Men cover.  I've always pictured him as a 30-year old Morrissey and that cover definitely evokes the resemblance --

what? no love for X-Men Forever #3? best cover ever!

@ TNC:  X marks the spot,

I totally agree with all three of those choices. I love Green Lantern and that cover might actually be one of my favorite covers ever for a GL cover. The Dark Xmen cover was an awesome cover as well. Unwritten besides being a fantastic comic, has continued to impress with the covers, and I totally look forward to the next one.

Between Green Lantern, Batman, WoNK, and the right side of Red Robin, DC wins the award for most dark/slightly bluish covers.

@ron  Storm. . .of evil!!

Posted by ohcaroline on 07/10/09 at 01:07 AM

Dark X-men cover is awesome . . . the inside not so much.

agreed

Now I'll have "Ms. Jackson" playing in my head each time I'll see that Dark X-Men cover.

Posted by chlop on 07/10/09 at 04:35 AM

I actually preferred the variant of GL.

Posted by muddi900 on 07/10/09 at 07:11 AM

Also, @josh, by carresing do you mean humping?

Posted by muddi900 on 07/10/09 at 07:53 AM

I haven't written anything.

I think that Green Lantern Mahnke cover is KILLER & the interior of the book is just as nice.

Posted by WadeWilson on 07/10/09 at 10:22 AM

My picks this week are definitely Green Lantern and Batman. Both working the black and blue color scheme.

@ohcaroline

Nice to see I'm not the only one who noticed the Namorrissey thing. :) It explains so much! "Girlfriend in a Coma" is all about Marrina and "Tomorrow" is sung to Sue Storm.

i don't read any of these (cause i just started reading comics) but if i had to pick it would be unwritten. just an awesome design.

Posted by Stepho on 07/12/09 at 04:46 AM

Don't believe there has ever been a comic book which made me want to read it less than "Dark X-Men".
