New Comics for 05/29/08 are wilting in the heat... of their awesomeness!

57 Posted on May 27, 2008 in articles by Conor Kilpatrick |

Get to pulling this Thursday's books, and then let us know what you're looking forward to most, what you're dropping, what others should be buying and anything you're thinking. Be heard, because we need you, iFanbase!

What are the iFanboys buying? Check it out here - Conor, Ron, Josh and Gordon the Intern.

This week Josh has the Pick of the Week, the poor bastard!

As I told you all in this week's shipping preview Mini, this is a crazy week for quality and/or highly anticipated books. Beyond the ones I mentioned on the show we also have the first Brubaker/Rucka/Lark issue of Daredevil and the next issue of New Avengers. It's insanity and I do not in any way envy Josh for having to choose the best book this week. That's the kind of decision that can lead a man to whiskey.

Bonus Question: We don't normally do comics related questions here, but this crazy week we're making an exception - what's the ONE book you're looking forward to the most this week?

Final Crisis.

It's a toss up between Astonishing X-Men (really? It's gonna be over? :( ) and Final Crisis. But boy howdy, pulling this week's books, it's amazing how many books are coming out that are just super anticipated. Damn... Maybe I should pick up Daredevil this week... I'm trying to keep up in trade (monthlies got monotonous) but Rucka/Brubaker is damn tempting...

BQ: Astonishing X-Men.

Posted by GungaDin on 05/27/08 at 06:17 PM

Bad week for 'Final Crisis' to come out -- I'd considered picking it up, but I think there's too much other stuff.  I'll go back and catch up in a slow week.  Getting Batman and GL on the DC side, the First Class books and 3 other Xtitles + the Angel Revelations series (which is apparently about Warren Worthington, though I spent a good while thinking it was another Whedonverse book).  Oh, and a little book called 'Daredevil' with a little creative team that brought us 'Gotham Central.'

BQ: Splitting semantic hairs -- I have to say I'm looking forward to Astonishing X-men the most, because I've been following this series from the first trade (before I even really read comics).  Waiting-for-Astonishing-Xmen has turned into a ritual that I'll apparently need to find some replacement for.  I suspect I may actually enjoy 'Daredevil' the most, though.

Posted by ohcaroline on 05/27/08 at 06:20 PM

The book I'm looking forward to the most is Final Crisis!!! I'm alsow looking forward to Batman, Green Lantern, Action Comics and Astouding Wolf-Man. Great week!

Posted by YannickV on 05/27/08 at 06:24 PM

I'm excited about a lot of books this week, but getting me some ASS (All Star Supes) is like a guarantee for brilliance no matter what. ;-)

Posted by RolandofGilead on 05/27/08 at 06:28 PM

Final Crisis, no question.

Posted by Jim on 05/27/08 at 06:34 PM

I'm anticipating Batman the most but I think All-Star Superman will probably be the best. (I can't believe I'm not picking Astonishing X-Men--it's what got me back into buying new ongoing series in the first place.)

Originally All-Star Batman was scheduled for this week too.

Action Comics

Ultimate Spider-Man

Batman RIP

Final Crisis.  Oh god please don't let this suck.

Posted by Julian on 05/27/08 at 06:41 PM

MAn, this week IS ridiculous.  I've got 13 books!

BQ: yup probably Final Crisis

Posted by CAM on 05/27/08 at 06:46 PM

Wow, 11 books.  That's huge for me.  I've decided that, even though I wasn't crazy about IC and I'm a far bigger Marvel fan than DC, I'm giving Final Crisis a whirl.  I wasn't going to, but I'm curious enough to take a peek.  Besides, who wants to be left out of the conversation?  I need SOMEthing besides Secret Invasion to disagree with Labor about.

Here's my list: New Avengers, Final Crisis, Green Lantern, All-Star Superman, Giant Size Astonishing X-Men, Marvel 1985, She Hulk, Thor, Ultimate Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men First Class (which may actually get the dropsies, as I'm loathe to ever buy more than ten books.)

Most anticipated?  The end of Astonishing X-Men, no contest.

Posted by RaceMcCloud on 05/27/08 at 06:53 PM

Final Crisis, easily.

Posted by PV on 05/27/08 at 07:01 PM

@Race!

We don't disagree on Secret Invsion! I am loving the main book and am enjoying New Avengers again for the first time since they went to Japan.

Posted by Labor on 05/27/08 at 07:16 PM

Pretty big week for me [Iron Fist, DD, Batman, All Star Superman, Astonishing X-Men, and Uncanny]       Probably looking forward to Astonishing the most but ASS and Batman should both be great as well, an awesome week overall.

Money is really tight and I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to most DC stuff besides Batman so not sure if I will pick up FC even though I want to read it. Guess I'll make a decision once I get to the shop.

BQ: I am most looking forward to Final Crisis and im hoping its gonna be AMAZING

Posted by rayclark on 05/27/08 at 07:48 PM

What a ridiculous week. I almost wish all these great books didn't have to come out at the same time. It's a good problem to have though. I'm really looking forward to Green Lantern, All Star Superman, Action Comics, Thor, Giant-Size but most of all Final Crisis.

Posted by lucero on 05/27/08 at 07:48 PM

I don't have a ton of books this week, but I still consider it a 'big' week as I'm stupidly excited for all of them. Batman, Green Lantern (damn you Josh for getting me into this character), Final Crisis, Batman Gotham After Midnite, Action Comics and Huntress.

BQ: It's a toss-up between Batman and Final Crisis. But as I've not read any of the previous Crisis books (don't judge me, I'm leaping in with blind and giddy glee), I'm going for Batman hands down as this RIP thing has me really stoked.

(PS: I'd like to point out the comic industry that I find it wholly unfair that this wednesday is my birthday, and on the one day of the year when I could've got my books on my actualy birthday you move the shipping date to thursday. I'm taking it personally. Of course, not that I could have bought them on wednesday as I live in the UK... But it's the principle, people! It COULD have happened.)

Two bucks on Batman to Win, Place and Show

Posted by youngday on 05/27/08 at 08:07 PM

Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men DEFINITELY. I KNOW it's going to be good (unlike FC which who can tell). Though sleeper-wise, I've been looking forward to Firebreather returning for a LONG time.

Dan. Dare.

Posted by s1lentslayer on 05/27/08 at 08:59 PM

Batman, Action Comics, Green Lantern, Thor, New Avengers, Teen Titans, And Uncanny. Unfortunately for I have given up on my store for the simple fact that they never have the books I most want to read. If it's not the big 2, then forget about it and sometimes even then they don't have what i want. And the guy can't keep my pull list straight!!!! So its mailordercomics.com for this guy. And I don't get my books for May until next week. On the other hand it do enjoy the comics binge.

BQ: Either Batman or New Avengers. Batman for the pure enjoyment for this new arch. New Avengers because I want something to happen with Secret Invasion.

Posted by ChrisGo on 05/27/08 at 09:12 PM

This is the biggest week I've had in a while. Not only in volume but also in anticipation. Batman, All-Star Superman, 1985, Tales of TMNT, Daredevil, GI Joe, Astonishing X-Men and Angel Revelations.

BQ: Even with all these great books I am most looking forward to Angel Revelations because he is one of my favorite characters and I am excited that he has his own book even if just for 5 issues.

Posted by comicdork37 on 05/27/08 at 09:28 PM

I have an ungodly amount of books this week.  My wallet will be shot before June is over if this keeps up. But with all the cash I am spending i couldn't be more excited.  I am just starting a bunch of new books that I can't wait to read, but most of all I am anticipating Final Crisis.

Action Comics #865
All Star Superman #11
Batman #677
Daredevil #107
Final Crisis #1 (OF 7)
Giantze Astonishing X-Men #1
Green Lantern #31
Marvel 1985 #1 (OF 6)

Thor #9
Ultimate Spider-Man #122
Uncanny X-Men #498
X-Men Legacy #212

Posted by Webnet on 05/27/08 at 09:49 PM

There are a couple of books I wanted to read but never believed I'd actually see them (1985 and that Angel mini). A couple, I'm just running out the clock on (Iron Fist, Wolf-Man). I think the big hit of the week, though, is probably Astonishing X-Men. I need closure.

Posted by Jimski on 05/27/08 at 10:04 PM

I'm grabbing the first 6 books on the pull list and Daredevil and Iron Fist.

BQ: All Star Superman is for sure the one I want the most.

Posted by Tork on 05/27/08 at 10:13 PM

I'm really looking forward to this week.  I don't have a huge list, but what's there is filled with quality.  Definitely can't wait for Final Crisis, Batman, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Green Lantern.  I'm dropping New Avengers, at least until SI is over.  I've disliked all of the Avengers tie-ins so far.

I REALLY want to get the Starman Omnibus, but lack the funds.  I will probably Instocktrades.com this one with a few other gems early next month.

BQ:  Daredevil.  Rucka + Brubaker = Pure Magic

Posted by Neb on 05/27/08 at 10:17 PM

What a huge week, I like them as it normally results in a good time but it hits the pocket hard.

And with a huge week I am unsure I have ever seen this much quality. I think I’m looking forward to Final Crisis, Green lantern and new avengers the most.

Action Comics #865

Astounding Wolf-Man #6

Marvel Comics Presents #9 Ms Marvel #27

Nearly Complete Essential Hembeck Archives Omnibus (though I didn't order it, so I doubt they'll have it tomorrow)

New Avengers #41

Tales Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #46

Thor #9

Uncanny X-Men #498

X-Men Legacy #212 (the two main X-Men books come out the same week)

Young Avengers Presents #5 (OF 6)

Coipel is back on Thor this issue, right?  If so, excited for that.  Also pretty excited for Northlanders, though I kind of wish this was the end of this storyline. Really excited for the Hembeck collection now that I see it's coming out out this week, and to see that it's only $25 for 900 pages!

True Story, Swear to God Archives Vol 1 is tempting, too.  I'm happy to see that Image is doing more of these Archives collections.

Excellent intro music last week! i'm always down with the Pistols. makes me feel i'm among friends here. this is a mega-week and my heart belongs to Batman, but.. Final Crisis is where all the chps are. however,

BQ: i'm pullin for the underdog. goin with New Warriors. i really enjoyed the last issue. the art's been top of the line from the start.. the story just needed some relevance and last issue it began to show some. let's hope this issue carries on where the last left off.

16 books this week, but there's at least six of thoes I can sort of ignore this week. I'm definitely looking forward to Final Crisis, All Star Superman, Green Lantern, and Marvel 1985. But...

BQ: I most anticipating the conclusion to Astonishing X-Men. There's no way Whedon can dissapoint for this final issue.

Posted by Ben0Bugenig on 05/27/08 at 11:13 PM

This is truly the most awesome of awesome comics week in a long, long time. If this week were a woman, it'd be Megan Fox reading you Watchmen while frying you up a big juicy prime rib and making sure your beer was chilled to just the right temperature.

Obviously, Final Crisis, New Avengers, All-Star Superman, Ultimate Spider-Man, Astonishing X-Men, Daredevil, Marvel 1985, Green Lantern, Frank Cho and Art Adams drawing Hulk in the same book -- so much goodness, I just hope nothing happens to me, my family, my car, or my comic book store before Thursday. (I hope that - and a lot more - in general anyway, but I double hope it this week).

BQ: Final Crisis, although I'm a little afraid of what Morrison we'll get. At least it'll look damn pretty.

Posted by Dan on 05/27/08 at 11:48 PM

I'm most looking forward to the Countdown To Final Crisis Vol 1 Trade ... just kidding, I'm not retarded.

Final Crisis of course.

The first issue of Batman RIP kinda killed a bit of my excitement for the arc, but I'm sure things will improve. Also, I'm excited to check out Batman: Gotham After Midnite ... why is it spelled like that?

Posted by WadeWilson on 05/28/08 at 02:33 AM

Well, I don't have any books I normally pick up coming out. So do you guys think I should get caught up on Scalped or get final crisis.  I can only afford to do one(I'm 6 issues behind on Scalped after picking up the first two trades).

BQ: Uh, nothing really.

Posted by thisisegan on 05/28/08 at 02:53 AM

Brubaker and Rucka on Daredevil.

Posted by ghostwriter on 05/28/08 at 05:12 AM

@thisisegan - I'm totally psyched for Final Crisis, and it'd be cool to jump on at the beginning just in case it's awesome. But if you're already invested in and enjoy Scalped then that may be a better use for your funds. Depends on how you feel dude. If money's tight, then maybe stick to what you know you like, then grab the Final Crisis trade later if it turns out to be good. Completely your choice though. :)

Posted by Eyun on 05/28/08 at 07:22 AM

If for nothing else than the sheer hype then FINAL CRISIS, but my heart goes strangely enough to GREEN LANTERN.  I started reading it at #29 to get back into comics and, after catching up with the trades absolutely love it.

Bonus Answer: Astonishing X-Men!

Posted by jonnyeatsdirt on 05/28/08 at 10:25 AM

Angel: Revelations. I haven't seen Adam Pollina's art in a while, and I love it. I saw a preview either on Marvel or CBR and it looks good. I'm also really looking forward to Thor. It's been great so far.

I'm not a big DC guy, so I'm not picking up Crisis. I also might drop Bataman RIP after this issue. I was kind of confused on what was going on in the last issue, and it started slow. If it's not any better I'll be dropping it.

BQ: Final Crisis

My books this week:

All Star Superman #11

Batman #677

Dan Dare #6 (OF 7)

Fables #73

Final Crisis #1 (OF 7)

Giant Size Astonishing X-Men #1

Marvel 1985 #1 (OF 6)

Proof #8

Speak of the Devil #6 (OF 6)

Ultimate Spider-Man #122

Uncanny X-Men #498

X-Men Legacy #212

Young Avengers Presents #5 (OF 6)

BQ: Probably the Hembeck Omnibus, honestly.  And I'm like the biggest Marvel Zombie you'll ever meet, and it's a big week for Grant Morrison on top of that.  PLUS, there are like 15 X Books hitting the shelves, but seriously, Hembeck is awesome.  Same story if it was a Sergio Aragones Omnibus.

Think Josh is gonna pick Daredevil?  That's my bet.

Posted by ActualButt on 05/28/08 at 01:07 PM

Scratch that, Fables is out this week.  He's picking Fables.

Posted by ActualButt on 05/28/08 at 01:08 PM

Action Comics, All Star Superman, Batman, Final Crisis, Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Gotham After Midnite, and Huntress (which I really enjoyed last time).  Hopefully it turns out to be as great a week as we all want it to be.

BQ: Final Crisis

Posted by Dez on 05/28/08 at 02:02 PM

This is a huge week for me as well. I have like, 15 books.  So many good ones to choose from. Final Crisis, two X-Men books, Green Lantern, New Avengeres, and many others. I think my mind (and my wallet) are going to explode.

BQ: Without a doubt Giant Size Astonishing X-Men.

Ultimate Spider-Man

New Avengers

Young Avengers Presents

Posted by bansidhewail on 05/28/08 at 08:59 PM

I was most looking forward to the True Story Swear to God Archives Vol.1 TP but man after reading Daredevil with Rucka, Brubaker, Lark back together maybe that's what I should have been looking forward to the most. I never noticed that you can't rate a book for this week because of US holidays before.

Posted by whirlwindx on 05/28/08 at 09:24 PM

It will be nice to see Wheden close out his run and really sad to see him go but I keep going back to Green Lantern.  It's the first DC book I've picked up monthly (thanks guys) and it's been great and been looking for it every week since the last issue to see when it's coming out again.

Posted by Jediaxle on 05/28/08 at 11:13 PM

Wow, every body talking about the heavy week this week made me go back and look to see if I missed something. Last week was stupid I had 13 issues and 3 trades. This week is better 6 issues and 2 trades.

BQ Its either the Sword or Northlanders. Both have been so great. Everyone should look at these two books. For sure grab the trade for the sword when it comes out. This is a great book by the Luna Bros

Three Grant Morrison books, two Geoff Johns books, and a Brubaker/Rucka Daredevil book. Wow. I think it's going to be a good week. I'll definitely read Final Crisis first, but after than I'm going to have a hard time deciding what to read next!

BQ: Final Crisis
