Same here. The art looks amazing but 8 issues at 4 bucks a pop is just too much.
If you enjoy Skottie's work and/or podcasts in general, check out his podcast called "The Devil and Me" that he does with his girlfriend. It's very funny and entertaining. I can't recommend it enough.
Posted by comicdork37 on 12/08/08 at 05:24 PMi have been waiting forever for this to come out
Posted by RoiVampire on 12/08/08 at 05:34 PMmight not get this but the art looks immaculate so I will be at least flipping through it
Posted by chrs7637 on 12/08/08 at 05:34 PMI'm very excited for this, but I'll wait for the hardcover so I can hand it out to people. I'll certainly flip through it in the store, though.
Posted by GungaDin on 12/08/08 at 05:43 PMThe art does look absolutely beautiful. Definitely picking this up.
Posted by p4tr1ck on 12/08/08 at 06:43 PMThey are doing the whole series!!! i am sooo excited i want the hardcover too but i dont know if can wait that long oh the agony!!!!
Posted by voodoomama on 12/08/08 at 09:06 PMAll the kids will eat it up, if it's packaged properly.
Posted by PymSlap on 12/08/08 at 10:59 PM@PymSlap- I agree all 10 of the kids who read comics will eat this series up.
Posted by Ruo21 on 12/08/08 at 11:29 PMha, skottie young's art is so totally suited for this story cannot wait to read this one.
Posted by malakilii on 12/09/08 at 12:43 AMScottie Young's art has grown leaps and bounds since his human torch days. i remember hating his art on that book but this is just great.
Posted by WinTheWonderboy on 12/09/08 at 01:47 AMHis new X Men Stuff Was Real Good Too
Posted by doddzilla on 12/09/08 at 09:16 AMI think Skottie Young is an incredible artist who is pushing the boundaries of what comic art can look like. I admire him so much for that. I SO want this in a collected volume but I'm buying the issues because I can't wait.
Posted by AlexG on 12/09/08 at 01:07 PM@AlexG - Same here. I'm so impatient. Funny thing, that nobody seems to care who's writing this, me included. Usually I'm a writer-guy, but the art...best I've seen so far from Mr. Young. Oh, Devil&Me is the only podcast I can't wait to get every week. Okay, enough rambling, more walking to the store...
Posted by cylonpete on 12/10/08 at 07:01 AM@Cyclonpete--good point about the lack of concern for the writing. I think that's partially due to Youngs art and partially due to it being a well known story. This book really is about seeing Skottie Young interpret those characters. It's sitting in my bag right now, but I don't want to open it just yet....
Posted by AlexG on 12/10/08 at 12:53 PMI picked it up and the writing is average. It reads like an illustrated classics story. But the art is amazing. Definitely worth the price of admission.
Posted by nukethewhalesagain on 12/11/08 at 01:13 AMWell, the writing was servicable, but the art...blew me away! I stared at every one of those pages for literally minutes. Loved the art, best thing I saw (not read) this week. And it was a art-heavy week too, with Maleev on Dark Reign, Echo and Phonogram out...
Posted by cylonpete on 12/11/08 at 08:41 AMWell the writing is mostly directly from Baum, it was only touched up a little. I wouldn't really call a classic "average" its just different than what we expect in comics. It was a different time
Posted by RoiVampire on 12/11/08 at 01:41 PMSo far a pretty cool adaption of the book. I just read the novel this past year and I’m glad I did because it was all still fresh in my mind as I read this comic. Skottie Young’s pencils are so cool in this. When I first saw the advertisement, I wasn’t sure about it but when I picked it up off the stands I knew I had to get it. If you are a fan of the novel, this comic looks like it’ll deliver a faithful adaption while giving you some gorgeous stylized art to look at. I think I’m going to get the whole series.
Posted by grifter78 on 12/12/08 at 12:34 PMFucking awesome book. PotW for sure.
Posted by Onic on 12/14/08 at 12:43 PMI almost passed this up. I'm so glad I didn't. I'm definitely adding this to my pull list. 5 stars easy
