I can't believe issue six is already here. It seems like only last month that I was waiting for #1. It's has been a great six months for Shellhead fans, though. Fraction and Larroca both seem at the top of their game in this book. I can't wait to see how the arc ends.

Just read issue #5 yesterday and I am very excited to read the conclusion of the first arc.

Posted by torippu on 10/06/08 at 07:39 PM

This arc was my frist Iron Man book and I have to say I like what I'm reading.  Can't wait to see how this ends and to see what comes next.

This arc was my first Iron Man book as well and I have enjoyed it but now that the hype from the movie has worn off a little bit for me and it looks like the next arc might have something to do with Spider-Man (I thought I saw some preview art with Spidey on the cover for #7 somewhere, but I could be wrong) this is probably the last issue for me. Hope this ends well.

I'm with you comicdork. I've been enjoying this, but the hype has passed for me too, and with these big X-Men crossovers coming up, I gotta drop something, and this is the likeliest candidate.

Issue 5 ended crazy, can't wait for this one.

@comicdork- I did see that cover with spidey too, I don't really want a crossover.

I read a preview for this issue and it filled me with glee.

But the art is still cruddy.

Posted by JumpingJupiter on 10/07/08 at 02:19 AM

@JumpingJupiter - Yeah, I really hate this artwork.  He does great armor and buildings, but thats it.  Personally, it looks like every single one of Tony's smile panels make him look like a pedophile.

@ the movie-hype people -- You actually read the comic based on movie hype? That was mistake #1. :)

Perhaps this series is better for people who were fans of Iron Man since before the movie? You know. Fans of the comic.

Posted by J4K3 on 10/07/08 at 03:14 PM

@Drake: I find the same thing he does Mechs and architecture pretty good, though his in panel compositions are sometimes wonky. His layouts are pretty good too. But the people? My goodness what a mess! Everything else is just the way I like it so it keeps me buying.

Posted by JumpingJupiter on 10/07/08 at 05:13 PM

@J4K3: I disagree that it was a mistake to read the series based on the movie. I had never read an Iron Man book prior to seeing the movie even though I have been reading comics for over 10 years now. The character just never interested me until recently and when I found out Fraction was writing I just couldn't resist. I'm not saying this title isn't good (because it is) it's just not for me as a long term title. At least now I will be open to reading an Iron Man book in the future if the story or creators interest me. I also think that movie hype is a great way to bring new readers to comics or a specific character/title even if is just for a short amount of time.

Posted by comicdork37 on 10/07/08 at 06:33 PM

The movie hype pushed me to start reading weekly instead of sporadically like I had been doing for the past 5 years.

I'm sticking with this title.

@J4K# - Why does it matter where people decided to like Iron Man?

Posted by conor on 10/07/08 at 08:34 PM

@J4K3-So long as people get interested in a comic, who cares why?  If a movie nudges people like JumpingJupiter or anyone else to get more into comics, then we all benefit and the thing we all love reaches more fans.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to seeing a Spidey crossover.

Iron Man & Spider-Man had a really interesting relationship during the New Avengers period up through Civil War and I'm very curious how much of that survived Mephisto.

@ohcaroline

Agreed - a Spider-Man crossover is exactly what this series needs to get out of the dark, heavy mood that the prior arc brought with it.

I'm a huge fan of Fraction's characterizations, here.  And I love the two final twists, which I won't spoil here.

I picked up this book because of the movie.  I've been reading New Avengers but never wanted to go buy the other books -- no Cap titles, no Tony titles, no anybody-else titles.  Certainly no Spiderman titles.  I thought that, after the movie, this new Iron Man title would be a good place to jump on in, and I was right.

Anything that gets people reading a comic is a fine, fine thing.  Knocking new fans for their motivations is a sure-fire way to get them to quit, or at least to never talk to *you* about the comics you love.

I read the first five issues in the store today and then bought this one. Damn it was great to read these back to back. Love the last few pages of this book. Also, very excited for a visit from Spider-Man.

Yeah, solid read and great way to finish off the first arc.  Hopefully the Spidey team-up will be fun.  Knowing Fraction, I don't have any doubts.  I think he'll write a great Spider-man

Posted by drakedangerz on 10/08/08 at 09:55 PM

This was awesome! Art has improved too!

What if I only bought one book this week? Should I make it my POW?

Posted by JumpingJupiter on 10/08/08 at 11:31 PM

@JumpingJupiter-Thats cheating!

Posted by drakedangerz on 10/09/08 at 12:35 PM

@Connor - In all realtity, it doesn't matter at all why anyone decides to read Iron Man.

Did I hit a nerve with everyone or something? Yikes. It just seems odd to me that someone would suddenly get interested in the comic based purely on the movie. It's not a bad thing. If it gets Iron Man some more readers, then great. It's an awesome book. However, it would seem that the movie-based interest in the comic is short-lived at best. That's my observation, anyway. Sorry I came off as a jerk.

Posted by J4K3 on 10/09/08 at 03:48 PM

@Drak: Then I'm gonna do it!

Posted by JumpingJupiter on 10/09/08 at 05:12 PM

I heart this comic.

Posted by Kimbo on 10/09/08 at 07:24 PM

This book was my POW. Absolutely the best thing to come out this week.

good story, my only complaint is that the cliffhanger of last issue was telegraphed a mile away.  how often has Tony controlled his armor remotely?
