    This may be the most excited for a comic I’ve been in a few years. What a genius concept, why has nobody thought of it before! I really hope this lives up to me expectations. The preview looked phenomenal. Hickman’s killing it on FF.

    I love me some Hickman – hoping that this series has the same kinda of historical conspiracy vibe that he brought to Pax Romano. Is there any likelihood of him telling more stories out of that universe (or ever finishing Red Mass for Mars, for that matter)?

    This book seems perfectly suited for Hickman’s crazy ideas. On FF and Secret Warriors his work sometimes feels constrained but here he has all the freedom he wants.

    This ‘non-retcon’ retcon or ‘secret history’ seems to go one of two ways.  Either completely fantastic or completely unnecessary/superfluous.  I really want this to be the former.

    Looking forward to this, ther concept is great (although it does make me think of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Hickman’s dialogues are sharp and the art looks beautiful.

    Did you know he was also part of S.H.E.I.L.D.? Genius, Isn’t it?

     

    In high school i wrote a script about how hilter went back in time using he’s third reich wierdo technology and swapped places with jesus. Then when jesus had he’s second coming thingy, he was born in a world where the symbols of the Nazi party were as prevalent in western society as christianity is now. So anyway the point of teh story was that jesus became an awesome spiritual rebel leader. he met nazi verisons of hermiway and paicso. 

     

    let me be clear. It wasn’t good and i’m not proud of it. That script kind of reminds me of this a little…. i shouid have thrown in Galgactus

    it will be interesting to see how this plays into the whole ‘shield was actually started by hydra’ thing Hickman has going in secret warriors. does this mean that hydra goes back this far too?

    I’m not officially pulling this yet, cause I have no idea if my LCS will get it. They should….but I should’ve requested for the pullbin months ago.

    Anyways, this book looks fucking gorgeous. Plus it’s Hickman doing crazy ideas with the Marvel universe. How can this not be the most looked forward book of the week?

    Hickman is an amazing writer with awesome ideas. I for one hope that this series gets to 60+. I am getting the first issue to wet my beak a little, then going to trade wait.

    If Marvel cancels this series I will kill myself.

    This was FUCKING amazing to read on every level. Brilliant, imaginative, somewhat confusing (in a good way) and just….God damn I’m sorry for the language but…..God damn.

    If Marvel fucks this up I will get soooooo pissed. I’m going all the way with an 11/5 for a rating. Hyperbole be damned! Everyone needs to read this series now!!

    This was ok…the thing with Hickman books is that they take awhile to really get going (like Nightly News and Secret Warriors), and this seems to be no exception. Just like in Fantastic Four and Secret Warriors, Hickman outlines some fantastic sounding ideas, but no real story yet to pull us in. I’m sure it will get better like Secret Warriors did, but I wasn’t really impressed with this debut issue.

    @TNC-Marvel isn’t entirely at fault if this book gets cancelled. If it doesn’t sell, it’s the readers who are to blame. Marvel has done nothing but promote the hell out of this book.

    I didn’t plan on picking this up, but I did anyway.  I really liked it (5/5) but I just KNOW that in about 6 months, I’m going to be here talking about how I wish I trade waited.

    If it stays this good, it’ll make an amazing Omnibus in 5 or 6 years.

    I honestly believe that in a couple years Hickman will be on the same level as Moore, Morrison and Ellis. Every book he works on is better than the last. At this point I’ll buy whatever he’s writing.

    The art is beyond incredible. Should I already know who this guy is? I’ll have to google him.

    I bought the black and white edition and I want more. The solicit for #2 doesn’t include a black and white edition. I hope this is wrong, cause I love to read plain Dustin Weaver. I stoped and awe three time reading this comic and the black and white Weaver Historical variant cover for issue #2, at the end, sent me into shock. FUCKING AWESOME!

    @comicbookchris- Not impress??? Did you not see the art? 

    @noni- Not a lot of plot??? At the same time we have the stories of Leonid, the Stark and Richard, the Pharaoh with En Sabah Nur(Apocalypse), the SHIELD, Leonid’s Dad and of course, Marvel’s Leonardo Da Vinci. And I’m sure I’m missing some important ones.;)

    The art was fine, I had no problem with it. In fact, I liked it quite a bit. Though I’m not going to sing an issues praises for art alone. In fact, I didn’t say that I wasn’t impressed by it, I just thought this first issue was ok, not spectacular. My reasoning behind it is that great ideas aside, this is the most basic of set up issues. I’m trying not to judge this issue based on the potential the future issues might have, because if I did, then yeah, Hickman seems to be really setting his cards right. But this issue alone, I’d say it has fantastic art, great set up, but no real plot immersion yet. But like I said, Hickman’s plot’s are slow burning. I’m going to guess that this series is going to follow the trajectory of Secret Warriors, in which the story didn’t get immersive until the middle of the second arc.

    I’m hearing alot of comparrisons that this is like Planetary, and while that is kinda true, remember this: that series not only had great ideas and settings, but had a great story, plot and characters to tie everything together from the very first issue. I am confident that SHIELD will boast a more cohesive story as it trucks along, so like I’m still on board.

    Wow.  This was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.  The art was phenomenal and the story subtle, layered and above all replete with high-minded concepts.  Hickman has made the Marvel Universe relevant for me again (before this and FF I was just buying X-Factor and DnA cosmic stuff).

    However, I can definitely see how this book is not for everyone.  Hickman’s style appeals to me because it is a move I have been waiting for in mainstream comics for years but for many it will be too abstract or prosey and it contrasts sharply with the down-to-earth, gritty and identifiable style that has been a Marvel trademark since its inception.  That’s totally okay.  The great part about the comics industry is that there is something for everyone.  Like much of the world there is no objective truth in comics (no, not even Watchmen – although I did love it).  This book was written for me.  Yes, I am convinced.  But that doesn’t mean other people have to like it.  I only hope – for purely selfish reasons – that enough people enjoy it to avoid cancellation.

    Saying "there’s no plot" is in fact wrong.  A correct critique could be "the plot did not engage me at all" if that’s how you feel.  For me it was very engaging, but I could see how some readers could be unexcited by this plot.  It just is what it is, may not be for everyone.

    I’m really starting to think that my comments aren’t being read, and that I’m getting shit upon because I’m not lauding this first issue as God’s gift to humanity like everyone else is. Just like I said in my past two comments…THIS. WAS. GOOD. This story is going great places, and this issue is setting up for a great story. But that’s the thing…for the story to be told, the stage has to be set, and the backstory of SHIELD had to be told. And that’s what this issue was…pretty much all backstory. I didn’t say that there was no plot, but no reason to get immersed in it yet (hence the phrase "no plot immersion"). Other series with extensive backstories (Planetary, Iron Fist, etc…) spaced it out through the series, while this crams it all into this issue. It works here because the ideas are fantastic, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how this backmatter relates to the story that will actually be told. So this first issue was good, but not without a few flaws. So chill out people, learn to take a little harmless criticism.

    i still can’t get past this concept as being silly. i just don’t understand the appeal. the idea of galileo fighting galactus doesn’t sound cool, it’s sounds retarded like something I would doodle in 5th grade, but judging by all the comments i’m alone on that. If they want to make this canon and have this actually be part of Marvel’s history…i don’t get the appeal.
