S.H.I.E.L.D. #1

Leonardo Da Vinci was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. So was Issac Newton. So were Imhotep and Zhang Heng and Galileo and many other geniuses throughout time. They were the first heroes to defeat Galactus and the Brood and turn Celestials back. They saved the world long before Captain America or Iron Man were ever born, but what does this mean to our heroes of today? What does this mean to Nick Fury? Do not miss this Marvel Comics masterpiece that fans will be talking about for decades to come. All the insanity is courtesy of JONATHAN HICKMAN (FANTASTIC FOUR, SECRET WARRIORS, Nightly News) and DUSTIN WEAVER (X-MEN).

  1. Um…yes please.

  2. This may be the most excited for a comic I’ve been in a few years. What a genius concept, why has nobody thought of it before! I really hope this lives up to me expectations. The preview looked phenomenal. Hickman’s killing it on FF.

  3. Hickman sold me on this when he was on word balloon. I can’t wait!

  4. Hickman’s name is on the cover so Im sold.

  5. I’m a huge Hickman fan; I hope this another hit from him.

  6. right now i will buy anything Hickman touches.

  7. @RedMoses "from Mars" – Yeah me too. I’ve been yearning for it since them.

  8. I love me some Hickman – hoping that this series has the same kinda of historical conspiracy vibe that he brought to Pax Romano. Is there any likelihood of him telling more stories out of that universe (or ever finishing Red Mass for Mars, for that matter)?

  9. Further curiousity… is this an ongoing or a mini? I’m in either way, but I don’t recall hearing what the format for this series was.

  10. ongoing, I think I heard him say on word balloon he has an ending in mind though.. I may be wrong

  11. I’m not enjoying FF as much as the rest, maybe I should switch to this instead?

  12. I like the look of the ads in the other Marvel books. Steampunk SHIELD is full of promise.

  13. I think I’ll check this out, but I don’t want to have to buy 800 other books as well as this one because it jumps all over.

  14. You had me at "Leonardo Da Vinci was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D."

  15. This book seems perfectly suited for Hickman’s crazy ideas. On FF and Secret Warriors his work sometimes feels constrained but here he has all the freedom he wants.

  16. Honestly, ‘Leonardo Da Vinci ws an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ made me cringe a little. That sounds a little silly. however i am interested in the book but i’ll wait until i have read it to make a judgement

  17. This ‘non-retcon’ retcon or ‘secret history’ seems to go one of two ways.  Either completely fantastic or completely unnecessary/superfluous.  I really want this to be the former.

  18. Crap! I’m trying to conserve here. Stop putting out cool books!

  19. Definitely checking this out.

  20. I really enjoyed his Fantastic Four issues. I can’t wait to see what he does here!

  21. i was sold as soon as i heard about this hickman steampunk espionage? how could i not. one of my most anticipated comics in a long time

  22. Whoops…thought this was a mini.  Anyone know how ongoing is ongoing? (Like 12, 30, 60, infinity…)  I must know for reasons of budget.

  23. edward is a cranky old man.

I’ve been waiting forever for this.

  24. @kmob181-Check out the latest iFanboy Don’t Miss Podcast. 50-60 issues assuming sales hold up well for the title.

  25. Looking forward to this, ther concept is great (although it does make me think of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Hickman’s dialogues are sharp and the art looks beautiful.

  26. @rockinggeek: Da Vinci was a cranky old man too.

Did you know he was also part of S.H.E.I.L.D.? Genius, Isn’t it?

In high school i wrote a script about how hilter went back in time using he’s third reich wierdo technology and swapped places with jesus. Then when jesus had he’s second coming thingy, he was born in a world where the symbols of the Nazi party were as prevalent in western society as christianity is now. So anyway the point of teh story was that jesus became an awesome spiritual rebel leader. he met nazi verisons of hermiway and paicso.

let me be clear. It wasn’t good and i’m not proud of it. That script kind of reminds me of this a little…. i shouid have thrown in Galgactus

  27. I’ll give it a try.

  28. @edward  That sounds like it could be a Harry Turtledove novel 🙂

  29. Yaaaaaaay

  30. so literally the day after I decide to jump on FF, I’m hit with this.  How could I not give this a go?

  31. All ideas are bad if badly executed.

  32. it will be interesting to see how this plays into the whole ‘shield was actually started by hydra’ thing Hickman has going in secret warriors. does this mean that hydra goes back this far too?

  33. @drake – wow.  thanks.  also, any idea if it’s going to stay at $3.99 for the whole series or is that just the first issue?

  34. @edward- I’m sure I would’ve love your story. It sound like my kind of story. Hitler, time travelling and Jesus… the holy trinity.

  35. first issue is $3.99 second is $2.99

  36. I’m not officially pulling this yet, cause I have no idea if my LCS will get it. They should….but I should’ve requested for the pullbin months ago.

Anyways, this book looks fucking gorgeous. Plus it’s Hickman doing crazy ideas with the Marvel universe. How can this not be the most looked forward book of the week?

  37. @skeets – many thanks.  I can afford it!

  38. @skeets-is this first issue double sized or is there another reason for the extra dollar on the first issue alone?

  39. solicited as 40 pages so there’s something extra in there

  40. Hickman is an amazing writer with awesome ideas. I for one hope that this series gets to 60+. I am getting the first issue to wet my beak a little, then going to trade wait.

  41. @AmirCat-Wet your beak? Never heard that expression. I’ve heard "wet your whistle", but that’s about it.

  42. @drake I will vouch for the phrase

  43. @Edward-Sounds like you’re channeling Grant Morrison.

  44. @drake – see Godfather Part II for phrase confirmation…in Italian though.

  45. If Marvel cancels this series I will kill myself.

This was FUCKING amazing to read on every level. Brilliant, imaginative, somewhat confusing (in a good way) and just….God damn I’m sorry for the language but…..God damn.

If Marvel fucks this up I will get soooooo pissed. I’m going all the way with an 11/5 for a rating. Hyperbole be damned! Everyone needs to read this series now!!

  46. Hopefully this is good news for the book (even if it was bad news for me) but the book was sold out at my LCS when I got there at 11:30am.

  47. This was ok…the thing with Hickman books is that they take awhile to really get going (like Nightly News and Secret Warriors), and this seems to be no exception. Just like in Fantastic Four and Secret Warriors, Hickman outlines some fantastic sounding ideas, but no real story yet to pull us in. I’m sure it will get better like Secret Warriors did, but I wasn’t really impressed with this debut issue.

  48. As a rule in nit nuts about first issues but if this is a sign of what is to come…. Wow!

  49.  I loved this book. POTW for me.

@TNC-Marvel isn’t entirely at fault if this book gets cancelled. If it doesn’t sell, it’s the readers who are to blame. Marvel has done nothing but promote the hell out of this book.

  50. Btw the color edition didn’t show at my lcs so I got the b&w variant, which was really cool. Would like to see more of this.

  51. Too much time-period-world-saving and not a lot of plot…Hickman sold the book better then I bought it.

  52. I didn’t plan on picking this up, but I did anyway.  I really liked it (5/5) but I just KNOW that in about 6 months, I’m going to be here talking about how I wish I trade waited.

If it stays this good, it’ll make an amazing Omnibus in 5 or 6 years.

  53. Is this bi-monthly?  I just noticed that #2 isn’t solicited until June…

  54. I now have a man crush on Leonardo da Vinci.

  55. I honestly believe that in a couple years Hickman will be on the same level as Moore, Morrison and Ellis. Every book he works on is better than the last. At this point I’ll buy whatever he’s writing.

The art is beyond incredible. Should I already know who this guy is? I’ll have to google him.

  56. I’m not a Marvel guy but one issue and I feel like I’m reading the spiritual successor to Planetary

  57. I bought the black and white edition and I want more. The solicit for #2 doesn’t include a black and white edition. I hope this is wrong, cause I love to read plain Dustin Weaver. I stoped and awe three time reading this comic and the black and white Weaver Historical variant cover for issue #2, at the end, sent me into shock. FUCKING AWESOME!

@comicbookchris- Not impress??? Did you not see the art?

@noni- Not a lot of plot??? At the same time we have the stories of Leonid, the Stark and Richard, the Pharaoh with En Sabah Nur(Apocalypse), the SHIELD, Leonid’s Dad and of course, Marvel’s Leonardo Da Vinci. And I’m sure I’m missing some important ones.;)

  58. @bluew23- Dustin Weaver did X-Men: Kingbreaker with Yost. Tie in with the DnA cosmic stuff and Brubaker Rise and Fall of the Sh’iar Empire. Awesome stuff.

@Heroville- I’m so with you on the spiritual successor to Planetary.

  59. I bought this as a test. It passed. I think I’m gonna keep buying it.

  60. The art was fine, I had no problem with it. In fact, I liked it quite a bit. Though I’m not going to sing an issues praises for art alone. In fact, I didn’t say that I wasn’t impressed by it, I just thought this first issue was ok, not spectacular. My reasoning behind it is that great ideas aside, this is the most basic of set up issues. I’m trying not to judge this issue based on the potential the future issues might have, because if I did, then yeah, Hickman seems to be really setting his cards right. But this issue alone, I’d say it has fantastic art, great set up, but no real plot immersion yet. But like I said, Hickman’s plot’s are slow burning. I’m going to guess that this series is going to follow the trajectory of Secret Warriors, in which the story didn’t get immersive until the middle of the second arc.

I’m hearing alot of comparrisons that this is like Planetary, and while that is kinda true, remember this: that series not only had great ideas and settings, but had a great story, plot and characters to tie everything together from the very first issue. I am confident that SHIELD will boast a more cohesive story as it trucks along, so like I’m still on board.

  61. I started reading this. And then I stopped. it’s not the kind of story I;m looking to read right now.

  62. Wow.  This was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.  The art was phenomenal and the story subtle, layered and above all replete with high-minded concepts.  Hickman has made the Marvel Universe relevant for me again (before this and FF I was just buying X-Factor and DnA cosmic stuff).

However, I can definitely see how this book is not for everyone.  Hickman’s style appeals to me because it is a move I have been waiting for in mainstream comics for years but for many it will be too abstract or prosey and it contrasts sharply with the down-to-earth, gritty and identifiable style that has been a Marvel trademark since its inception.  That’s totally okay.  The great part about the comics industry is that there is something for everyone.  Like much of the world there is no objective truth in comics (no, not even Watchmen – although I did love it).  This book was written for me.  Yes, I am convinced.  But that doesn’t mean other people have to like it.  I only hope – for purely selfish reasons – that enough people enjoy it to avoid cancellation.

  63. kmob181-Exactly.

  64. This book can simply be summed up as "if a Vertigo book took place in the Marvel Universe."

  65. @Slockhart

Yeah, I could see that.  I loved it no matter what it was.

  66. Damn this was awesome.

  67. That was unexpectedly AWESOME!!  WOW!  I can’t believe a comic like this is out.  This is "A level" stuff that you rarely see in comics.

  68. ah, that hickman. i could see this turning into forrest gump. where historical figures just make cameos for no reason.

    but hey!! it looks cool!

  69. POTW.

Any comic that makes me wonder if King Arthur was in SHIELD, deserves POTW.

  70. story titles!

  71. This reminds me of Planetary. I’m entrigued though.

  72. So according to you all I need to buy this.

  73. This was awesome, but yeah, no plot yet. Lots of guys with mustaches in this issue, too.

  74. @drakedangerz – Don Fanucci mentioned it in "Godfather Part II"

  75. @PeterParker – Thank you for vouching for me. Salute’! If there ever comes a time, where you need me to vouch me for, Don AmirCat will gladly volunteer.

  76. @amircat lol one day and that day may never come I will ask you to vouch for me…

  77. I can’t believe some of you are saying that there’s no plot??? You have every right to not like it, but don’t say there’s no plot just cause you don’t see one. Re-read.

  78. Saying "there’s no plot" is in fact wrong.  A correct critique could be "the plot did not engage me at all" if that’s how you feel.  For me it was very engaging, but I could see how some readers could be unexcited by this plot.  It just is what it is, may not be for everyone.

  79. did anybody else notice the Apoclypse cameo?

  80. I’m really starting to think that my comments aren’t being read, and that I’m getting shit upon because I’m not lauding this first issue as God’s gift to humanity like everyone else is. Just like I said in my past two comments…THIS. WAS. GOOD. This story is going great places, and this issue is setting up for a great story. But that’s the thing…for the story to be told, the stage has to be set, and the backstory of SHIELD had to be told. And that’s what this issue was…pretty much all backstory. I didn’t say that there was no plot, but no reason to get immersed in it yet (hence the phrase "no plot immersion"). Other series with extensive backstories (Planetary, Iron Fist, etc…) spaced it out through the series, while this crams it all into this issue. It works here because the ideas are fantastic, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how this backmatter relates to the story that will actually be told. So this first issue was good, but not without a few flaws. So chill out people, learn to take a little harmless criticism.

  81. @comicBOOKchris: i read your comments, just relax. it’s cool. i agree with some of your points

  82. @edward- of course I saw En Sabah Nur, its the first thing I looked for when I read pharaoh Khasekhemwy.

  83. eddie murphy is the first thing i look for when i see sweet brother Numsie!

  84. Yes but did you see the Khonshu/Moon Knight cameo in the same panel?

  85. This was freaking awesome!

But I don’t feel like reading it. It’s great but I’m not in the mood right now.
  86. @edward/rockingeek: That was Apocolypse wasn’t it? That is going to be really interesting to see if Hickman goes to explain his (if any) role in the formation of SHIELD.

  87. who the fudge is khonshu? hare hare khonshu.

@TNC: it would be interesring if apocolypse was involved but i don’t think he will be

  88. i still can’t get past this concept as being silly. i just don’t understand the appeal. the idea of galileo fighting galactus doesn’t sound cool, it’s sounds retarded like something I would doodle in 5th grade, but judging by all the comments i’m alone on that. If they want to make this canon and have this actually be part of Marvel’s history…i don’t get the appeal.

  89. @Heroville- thanx, didn’t realize that was Khonshu on the left. Awesome.

    @edward- He’s a Heliopotian God and Moon Knight’s Patron.

  90. @Hexsas- not more silly than a spider-man or a guy who gets green and powerful when he’s angry or fuckin’Aunt May!

  91. @Hexas- Oh I forgot one, Tony Stark in a Iron Man suit.

  92. This is the sort of book I’d buy on-line if I had the tech and it was accessible.

  93. what’s with the kid who’s all cosmicy? Oh well I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
