Destroyer #1 (OF 5)

"DESTROYER," PART 1
For sixty years, Keen Marlowe has been a super hero, taking down bad guys, fighting the good fight. But it's is about to come crashing to an end. See, Marlowe is dying -- maybe today, maybe tomorrow, the only question is when. But Marlowe isn't about to go quietly into the night. Before he goes, he intends to leave the world a safer place for his family. And if that means hunting down -- and murdering -- every super-villain he can, so be it. They don't call him "Destroyer" for nothing.

Never heard of this before today.

Get it or else!!  I can't wait, been waiting for the longest time and Marvel is finally releasing this.

Posted by drakedangerz on 03/30/09 at 05:21 PM

Is there a pie chart to determine how this reflects on Image sales?

Posted by kndoubleu on 03/30/09 at 05:32 PM

@kndoubleu-Three of them :D

Posted by drakedangerz on 03/30/09 at 05:45 PM

can anyone explain what the hell this is?

Posted by DarthDuck on 03/30/09 at 05:57 PM

@DarthDuck: A comic book from Marvel MAX whose plot description is listed above.

Posted by conor on 03/30/09 at 06:07 PM

If this is extra sized, I'm in, but I doubt it. Marvel miniseries seem to be $4 a issue.

Posted by miyamotofreak on 03/30/09 at 06:37 PM

Robert Kirkman is enough to make me check this out.

Posted by balsalm on 03/30/09 at 06:54 PM

So, I am confused and psyched. Didn't Kirkman say he wasn't doing work with Marvel anymore? So is this an old story that hadn't been published or what?

Stoked for the Walker art too.

Posted by brianmaru on 03/30/09 at 07:03 PM

@Brianmaru: From Word Balloon:

Any fear that this declaration could mean the end of any offers from DC or Marvel?

"I wouldn't have done this if I was not content to ever do another Marvel or DC book...and I know if I keep doing good books that people like...there gonna let me sell a book for them...

"I have books still coming from Marvel - The Destroyer Max book I'm doing with Cory Walker? That is one of the best things I've ever written, Image, Marvel, wherever... I am very proud of it. I gave it my all, and Cory is killing on that title... It was my first experience working with Axel Alonso and he is one of the best editors in the industry... My Killraven series with Rob Liefeld is going to rock ...it's new ideas at Marvel...they're almost like creator owned books, but they're not and that's cool. I went into them with my eyes open. I created more villains for The Destroyer's six issues then I did for the first 12 or 24 issues of Invincible and that's fine. I created those for Marvel, and it was blast . I didn't hate my time there.

"I'm not saying crazy stuff...I'm not trying to burn a bridge...I hope this doesn't offend anyone there...I have friends at Marvel and DC...I talk to Dan DiDio and Joe Quesada, they're not doing a bad job, and I'm not trying to say bad things about their companies. I'm playing nice."

I'm stoked about more cory walker art. I love the way his stuff looks. Remember that issue of punisher war journal he did with Kraven's son or whatever? I wish he could have been on that whole arc. His stuff is just lovely.

Posted by NealAppeal on 03/30/09 at 07:26 PM

Well this came out of nowhere....Interesting premise (although sounds Punisher v.2 to be honest)...Trade waiting.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 03/30/09 at 07:30 PM

Interesting enough premise, and I'm a huge Kirkman fanboy, so I'll be checking this out.

Posted by kwisdumb on 03/30/09 at 07:49 PM

Oh and to extend on kndouble's question:

How many more issues of this will sell against Astonding Wolf-Man and Invincible? 2-3 times as more?

Posted by TheNextChampion on 03/30/09 at 07:51 PM

Kirkman shoould spend more time on getting the last two Invincible trades out instead of taking up another book. I'm still getting this though;)

Posted by s1lentslayer on 03/30/09 at 10:25 PM

Who's cooler Seaguy or the Destroyer?

Ya I'll pass.

Posted by Ruo21 on 03/30/09 at 10:39 PM

@Ruo: So far Seaguy, only cause I dont know who destroyer is.

Oh and this cover has a Skrull on it....just in case your not all sick of that by now.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 03/30/09 at 11:11 PM

@Ruo21-The preview has Destroyer punching a guy's face off and then jamming a rifle through another guy.  Thats pretty cool

@TNC-Thats not a Skrull.  Destroyer wears a green mask

Posted by drakedangerz on 03/30/09 at 11:24 PM

@Drake: Oh! So he does, my mistake.

Huh and it's based on a 'Timely' characters, that makes it more interesting...

Posted by TheNextChampion on 03/30/09 at 11:38 PM

Any idea how pages this is? I'm kinda boycotting $3.99 books unless they aren't regular size ... which means I don't buy many Marvel books.

Posted by WadeWilson on 03/31/09 at 01:58 AM

there really is limit to the amount of times i can see a superhero punch a hole in someone, it loses it's impact pretty quickly

having said that, i down for this book

Posted by edward on 03/31/09 at 05:53 AM

i just saw the preview for this on newsarama, and i am reconsidering whether i am getting this. I have never read anything kirkman has done. so i will have to think it over.

Posted by micahmyers on 03/31/09 at 08:54 AM

Conor, thank you for the clarification sir.

Posted by brianmaru on 03/31/09 at 11:16 AM

The Destroyer looks like a cross between The Green Goblin a Skrull and Punisher... I dunno..

I guess it doesn't matter becase i'm picking this up

Posted by MrPopular on 03/31/09 at 11:29 AM

@WadeWilson: It's standard size.

Posted by conor on 03/31/09 at 12:02 PM

I just saw the preview for this on newsarama too and:

HOLY SHIT! This is violent!! But after the 3rd horrible, and bloody death; it got old after 6 pages of the preview....Yeah this is trade waiting for sure.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 03/31/09 at 12:12 PM

If people say it's good, I'll get the trade.

Posted by Diabhol on 03/31/09 at 03:39 PM

I read this in my LCS, didnt buy it. So I wont do a full on review for it.

Basically it's a nice premise to bring back an Golden/Silver Age character but the premise of the mindless violence wore out it's welcome pretty early. Yeah this was definitely trade waiting deserving.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 04/01/09 at 01:47 PM

This book was great! Can't wait to continue the story!!

Posted by JAMESDEAN2020 on 04/01/09 at 05:28 PM

Wow.  That was so awesome.  Came out of nowhere and I am so glad I picked this up.

Posted by Spoons on 04/01/09 at 06:06 PM

Entertaining, but not very dense.  A commode comic for sure.

Posted by OddsBodkins on 04/01/09 at 08:17 PM

A very solid 4-star book. The premise is interesting and I'm definitely on for the next issue.

Posted by kwisdumb on 04/01/09 at 08:33 PM

A solid first issue for sure. I really liked the clean art.

Posted by s1lentslayer on 04/01/09 at 08:58 PM

Quite good.  I loved the artwork.  Fun and a quick read, but no less entertaining.

Posted by drakedangerz on 04/01/09 at 09:14 PM

Oh my God, Killraven! When was that @#%$ing thing announced?

Posted by Jimski on 04/01/09 at 11:45 PM

August, 2007! Wizard World Chicago!

"In 2008, Marvel gives it another go, this time with Robert Kirkman and Rob Liefeld attached as the creators on a five issue miniseries."

Announced that same week: Genndy Tartakovsky's "Cage!" How's everyone liking that so far?

Posted by Jimski on 04/01/09 at 11:50 PM

@Jimski: Rob Liefeld?

Cages?

What type of universe did you go to in 2007?

Posted by TheNextChampion on 04/02/09 at 12:05 AM

This was awesome! I love the concept; taking what would be the late career of an old character. It makes us have to wonder about whatever history the character had originally and what Kirkman had created. Hopefully the series will give us some flashbacks or something like that to lay it out for us; i.e. me (I actually would prefer if they left us in the dark from a story standpoint, but knowing Kirkman can never return to the character, I'd want to know from his take on the character how all these things occur).

Posted by captbastrd on 04/02/09 at 12:19 AM

the super-violence in this was a little too much for me, but the story really intrigued me i will be buying the rest of these.

Posted by micahmyers on 04/02/09 at 08:36 AM

I'm confused by those saying that the violence got old after six pages, and that they're gonna wait for the trade. If you got tired of it that quickly, why would you commit to paying for a trade?

Posted by ActualButt on 04/02/09 at 09:05 AM

@Actual: Goes the story is interesting enough to wait for trade....But if the hook if this comic is just the mindless violence then maybe it isnt worth trade waiting.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 04/02/09 at 12:28 PM

The violence in the beginning was to hook you in to check out the book.  Its standard practice to try to get your attention like that in not just comics, but movies as well.  There's going to be more of it later for sure, but thats not all this book is about.

Posted by drakedangerz on 04/02/09 at 02:39 PM

I don't know, the interaction between Destroyer and his wife and doctor showed that there was more to be said about this book than just mindless violence.

I thought it was really good.

Posted by balsalm on 04/02/09 at 08:54 PM

@drake: Well nothing says like getting your intention then seeing a face explode with a punch to the face...

Posted by TheNextChampion on 04/02/09 at 10:27 PM

mindless violence began and finished the book.

this was pretty good. i instantly like that old fella. but seriously, flying jaws and eyeballs? pushing a rifle though someone? and finishing the book with a snappy oneliner after murdering someone while literally covered in blood?...... you know, whatever, i don't care because it's all though out the book.

the art was fantastic, the dipiction of action was great. i loved the way the page turn was used.

Posted by edward on 04/03/09 at 09:25 AM

I gotta agree with edwards comment above about punchin holes in people...I'm starting to feel the hyperviolence is a bit overdone as well

Posted by AlexG on 04/03/09 at 12:51 PM

This was so close to pick of the week for me. It really did feel like this character has been around for years and has tons of history
