Crossed #0 (OF 9)

Crossed #0 (OF 9)

Garth Ennis has pulled out all the stops to write the most twisted book of his career, Crossed! Through ten heart-stopping chapters, Crossed is his horrifically visceral exploration of the pure evil that humans are truly capable of indulging. This gut-wrenching vision is brought to vivid - and more than a little disturbing - life by his partner in crime Jacen Burrows. Imagine, for a moment, the worst crimes against humanity. Picture the cruelest affronts to decency. Conjure your darkest nightmares - and then realize it could all be so much worse. When civilization crumbles in one terrifying moment; when people are gleefully breaking into unthinkable acts of violence all around you; when everyone you love has died screaming in agony: What do you do? There is no help. There is no hope. There is no escape. There are only the Crossed. Certain to be the most depraved and corrupt book of the year, this one is not for the faint of heart! This #0 issue is not a preview, it features the essential first chapter of the story and is available with a Regular or Wraparound cover by Burrows as well as a rare 1-in-15 Red Crossed Edition featuring a striking Black, White and Red cover by Burrows."

I love it when Garth Ennis does a book on religion.  I hate it when they do issue zeros.

Posted by Brandon2 on 08/04/08 at 06:29 PM

oh, i didn't know this was about religion. looks awesome though.

I too love when Ennis writes this kind of stuff. I hate when it's 9 issues at 4 bucks a pop and multiple covers I have to choose from. But still looking forward to it none the less.

Who said this book was about religion? I was under the impression it was a 28 days later type of scenario. Either way, Garth Ennis for a dollar, count me in.

If this gives me half the nightmares Preacher gave me, it will be well worth a dollar.

Geex Louise! Who is that synopsis aiming the book at? "Most depraved and corrupt?"  Who reads that and thinks, "That's for me!"  I thought Preacher was great inspite of that stuff, not because of it.

@Andrew: Why else would you read Ennis stuff? Personally I skip his war stories stuff (even though I hear it's good) and go for the Preacher, Punisher and The Boys type books. So the answer to your question is me (even if it was rhetorical). To each their own. So does this mean you won't be picking this book up?

Depraved? Corrupt?

Count me in.

I assumed it was about religion because it's Ennis and the dude has a big cross burned into his face.

Did Jacen Burrows do the art in Chronicles of Wormwood?  That was okay, but normally I hate all of Avatars artists.  Mike Wolfer most of all.

@Andrew

I do.

Im really lookin forward to this one.

@Brandon2 - i don't think it's to do with religion at all. the synopsis doesn't mention it and it wasn't mentioned in an interview Ennis did specifically about Crossed. it seems to be more of a tale of what human beings are capable of, and survival instincts, stuff like that.

Just reading that paragraph got me hooked. I have really read much of Garth Ennis stuff but im totally up for this...

wow, what a shit issue. serves me right for buying a #0 i suppose. still gonna buy #1 in the hope that it gets ineteresting.

Posted by deadspace on 08/06/08 at 05:50 PM

I didn't think it was that bad, deadspace. Especially for $1. Granted, some of the art made me scratch my head, but I'm glad I didn't see the "crossed" chef f'in the knife hole pre-bomb. It'd remind me too much of those stories about Conor's nightlife.

Posted by RegBarc on 08/07/08 at 01:13 AM

TERRIFYINGLY AWESOME! Pick it up. I find with most of these Avatar books, you kind of need to get over/grow into the art style, but the stories are mostly there.

Posted by southbymidwest on 08/07/08 at 01:01 PM

I liked the art style. It's just that when I'd finished it I was left thinking "well that was a pointless issue". Nobody needs to buy it - all you need to know is somehow a bunch of people are "crossed" and they seem kinda like zombies or infected in some way. If you get biten by one of the "crossed" you get 'infected' too. No one knows where or how it started. Wow. Excitement!! ;-)

But yeah, at least it was just $1 :)

I thought it was a nice prologue. You can't really complain about the lack of content, when it's only $1. It's a set-up issue, and for what it is, it worked. It was entertaining, it gives you a taste of the story, and the world the comic is set in, to see if you wanna jump on for the regular series. I'd like if more new comics gave us these preview style issues at a discount, to give us a taste test.

I like the art too, I don't really understand the negativity about it. *shrugs*

Can somebody explain the Avatar art style in words? I know it when I see it right away but I just can't really define it. All I can come up with is that the people look very real and they use heavy inking. It's a style that I really didn't like at first for a reason that once again I can't explain but it has grown on me.

Posted by comicdork37 on 08/08/08 at 03:36 PM

I may be wrong, but I think the "Avatar art style" is third rate Steve Dillon. Which is actually pretty decent, when you consider how good Steve Dillon is. but as I'm a thrid rate stick figure artist, i don't like to trash the artists too much. Although I actually kind of liked the art in this, so i don't know why I'm making this post. Sorry, my mind is still hurting from reading Hulk #5.

Posted by JohnVFerrigno on 08/08/08 at 04:29 PM

I liked the art, call me crazy.  Definitely had a Dillon feel, as JVF mentioned. The story, on the other hand, was rather bland.  how many times have we seen this before?  I'll give Mr. Ennis some time though, and assume there is a twist coming up.

@comicdork -- Avatar art style? I read a few of the Avatar books, and the art styles arn't all the same. I guess the thing that stands out about the art in the books to me is that it's non-traditional, but you could say that about half the books on the stands these days, no matter what company puts them out.
